Dealing with aches and pains: Making the home more ergonomically sound

Feel yourself struggling with aches and pains on a day to day basis? It’s one of those things that can start to creep up as we get older. Osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel, old injuries, tendonitis, back stiffness, poor fitness, and others can all cause various bodily aches and pains, especially in the joints and muscles.

Or perhaps you have older parents, or loved ones, who are struggling with dealing with aches and pains? Even if you aren’t quite yet feeling the effects of old man time, you may have noticed your older relatives becoming slower, wincing when moving, and struggling to move about in the same capacity that they used to.

This pain may also be exacerbated, depending on the types of medications taken to treat it, general physical health, and the ergonomics of the home and workplace.

Ergonomics in the home

Taking care to make your home more ergonomically sound can help to deal with aches and pains, giving your body the best chance to repair itself and producing less stress on your joints and muscles.

Living room arrangements

For many of us, the living room is one of the epi-centres of our homes; it’s where we go to relax at night, to read a book, watch our favourite shows, or just to chat with family and feel comfortable and content for a few hours – or even all evening.

A current couch or recliner may be insufficient if it is low, too soft, too hard, or with cushioning at the wrong levels for the body. If it is hurting when going to sit down and relax at night, or it is impossible to sit comfortably for a few hours, then a lift chair may be the right solution.

Lift chairs, like the lift chairs offered by La-Z-Boy, provide the ultimate in living room comfort, while helping to ease both up and down into the chair. These chairs keep the back straight while getting into and out of the chair. They are also able to be fully reclined, which is perfect for those who have a habit of falling asleep in the living room!

Comfort in the bedroom

Considering we spend, on average, 8 hours of each day – or night rather! – in bed, this is when we should be taking measures to ensure that sleep is deep, uninterrupted, and the most relaxing that it can be. Choose these items for the bedroom for the best sleep:

  • a high bed, for easily getting in without bending down too far
  • a good quality and appropriate firmness mattress and base, to help relax the body while sleeping
  • a mattress topper, if necessary
  • an ergonomic pillow to help align the spine correctly, depending on the sleeping position you are accustomed to

Thinking carefully about how to make the home more comfortable can help immensely when it comes to abating aches and pains.
