Murray 'Muzza' Inglis

Find out what's on the mind of a radio celebrity.
Read Muzza's Blog here!

Hi and Welcome,

In case you are wondering who I am and how I got here here’s a quick summary.

My real name is Murray Inglis I was born on the 12th of May 1943 at the Nurse Ellis Nursing Home in New Plymouth my late Mum Peggy said I couldn’t wait to get out and was actually born on the door mat. Life was good in those days we lived near the beach and had wonderful holidays and some great friends some of whom I will never forget even though we have lost touch over the years.

I was raised in Fitzroy and was bashed around by nuns with ridiculous name like Burtille and Rupert at St John Bosco Primary school, then entered the State system at New Plymouth Boys high, that’s was a shock when I realized that morning weren’t taken up with mass and Catechism.

Then one morning a local radio announcer from the then 2XP Murray Hewson, came to judge the school sight reading contest… I won. But the big thing was he told me I really should consider a career in radio.

I was in Christchurch during the 70's. I was Muzza in the Morning and hosted the Breakfast show on Radio Avon with Mike Richardson who was indeed the Canadian who died of a Brain Tumor. Mike was also heard later on 3ZB, he was a wonderful guy, with very dry humour and some great life storys.

I myself however am definitely alive and Kicking..
My most famous stunt at Avon was probably the Lock in where I locked myself in the studio for round 48 Hrs...dont ask me why!!! I also won the American Billboard magazine Air personality of the Year award in 1977 where I was voted Best Announcer in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the Top 10 in The World...quite an Honour.

A couple of weeks ago I was interviewed on National radio re my four decades in radio , if anyone wants to listen to it go to the National Radio Website...look under Afternoons with Jim Mora, then Reeling in the Years Broadcaster Murray Inglis. The full 1Hr Interview should be still there

So this year I celebrated my Fourth decade in that business. And what an adventure it’s been!!! Yeah one of these days I will write the book.

So what am I going to write about? Well gossip seems to be covered, books also. So let’s say I will write about anything that comes to mind. I love movies, most kinds of music, I read, am a self confessed TV addict, follow Rugby League, am a gadget freak, run small studio in my lounge recording commercials etc for local and overseas clients. I host a daily show between 2 and 7 on the Solid Gold FM playing songs that I loved when I first started in radio, and still find them great and exciting. Face it first time round they were in Mono and on AM, now they are in Stereo (Soon the be HD) and on FM.

by percypunter 24th June 2008 WOW, i remember muzza well from way back, in fact in the 1970s i remember getting him to come to my butchers shop where i gave him a xmas ham and turkey and a few other incidentals for xmas because he looked after us "racing" people so well, BUT i also remember he DIED from a brain tumor so what is going on here????????????
by percypunter 24th June 2008 Righto, c'mon you oldies help me out here, who am i mixing this young fella up with. The way i remember it Muzza Ingils was the radio announcer for 3zb in the late 1970s. He was the most popular of all the announcers and he was Canadian and as i said in my earlier post he died of a brain tumor probably early 1980s. So if it wasn't Muzza then who was it????? My name is AL but my surname is not Zeimhers so i thought my memory was A okay : - )
by percypunter 26th June 2008 My apologies Mr Inglis, i have been corrected by radio n.z. and the name was Mike Richardson, glad to know we don't really have have the walking dead among us haha. I did think my memory was better than that but i do remember you actually had quite an impact while in ch-ch, probably with Z.M. My big concern now is that i may have to get my pills changed because after making a mistake as a 4yr old i swore never to let it happen again and here i am at 68 and another goldarn mistake : - )
by Kitt 21st July 2008 HI Murray,I remember those Radio Avon days and the party's on the hill.Ed Taylor was a friend of mind.Good times, enjoy listening to you on Solid Gold.
by intercityb10m 2nd December 2008 Hi Muzza , i also have great memeroys of your radio days of the past and remember you at your best at radio avon, and have a tape of some clips back from the 70s. i tune in every afternoon on solid gold . bring back radio avon i say and dont retire soon like allan dick as another great announcer i will miss cheers and all the best
by Simonf 30th January 2009 Hi Muzza. I have fond memories of you and Mike Richardson on Radio Avon in Christchurch in the 70's. I also remember Allan Dick on Radio Avon and later Peter Sinclair. Can remember the saga of you locking yourself in the studio supposedly over the fact that you had been told off for telling supposedly "blue" jokes in the early morning. Then later it came out that it was a stunt by the radio station. Great music in those days and I always missed you until and Radio Avon until i found Sold Gold lately. Bring the good times back. One of the announcers on RA ended up as caretaker of the Timeball Station in Lyttleton, but cant remember who it was. Also remember Aussie Rick Ditchburn. What happened to him?
by Winks 5th March 2009 The guy who went to Timeball Statrion was Lee Hanner. Not sure what happened to him but Rick Ditchburn is in Melbourne and still in Radio
by macka 7th May 2009 did Lee Hanner not go into real estate, or was that prior to the timeball episode?
by Stuie 18th May 2010 Lee Hanner works for Harcourts in Christchurch.
by mary042 28th April 2011 Whatever happened to John Campbell (No, not the one on television - it's a common name) who was a radio announcer in Christchurch in the 70s at the same time as Muzza?
by Porscheman 10th August 2011 I remember that lock in stunt. Absolutely brilliant. Then one day you were gone only to find you on Solid Gold.Always enjoy listening to Muzza unfortunately I don't get to listen to the radio much in the afternoons these days but when I do I love the songs that you play. Keep up the good work and may we have many more years of your company on the radio.
