During the past few months I have been doing a lot of renovation work around the old home. Painting both the inside and outside and tiding up any odd bits that have become damaged over the years. Like me the old place has a few scars caused by being lived and loved in including the children and pets who still believe walls are made to bounce off and windows ideal targets for cricket balls!  However, would we have it any other way?  Before I really do start to wax lyrical there is a reason for the opening splurge. During the painting phase I noticed that a few of the windows had become scratched particularly around the edges where paint had been scraped off over the years. Noticing these scratch marks lead me to start thinking about how I could cover them up simply because when you know they are there they seem to become more noticeable. You know like the pimple or spot on your face that no one else notices except you.

Well I could have always replaced the glass but that would (a) be too expensive and (b) far too easy.

I did what I always do in these circumstances and took a wander around my local hardware store to get some inspiration.  Now I’m going to tell you about the product that I found but before I do I want to make it very clear that this is not a paid advertorial.  I’m writing about this product because I found it to be so good I want to share it with the GrownUps Do It Yourselfers.

The product I found was window film, not the dark tinted stuff that mobsters and famous people use on their Limo’ s but very nicely patterned film. Alkor DecorDIY film is so easy to use I was able to create a very nice Stained Glass effect on the two windows alongside my front door that when my son called he thought I’d had stained glass fitted!

The thing that really impressed me was how easy it was to apply and the instructions easy to follow.

This innovative and inspiring decorating material gives you attractive and practical screening properties and looks fantastic.

It combines the benefits of conventional translucent window film with a decorative effect. I found it very easy to apply and was impressed by its screening and light filter properties. Just in case you do make a mistake it has a special adhesive that allows parts to be easily removed and reapplied during installation plus if you get bored with the effect it can be easily removed even after lengthy adherence

Finally and on the arty side it allows your decorating imagination come up with unique applications for windows inside and outside of your home.

I also used some of the decorative window edging around the dining room windows. I can tell you not only has this film enhanced the look of my windows it has also hidden the scratch marks that started me off on this quest in the first place!
