Reasons to Start Kayaking This Summer

Article by Michael Page

Kayaking and canoeing are two activities that are quickly gaining popularity with people of all ages. Here are just a few reasons why kayaking/canoeing might be right for you to try.

1. Paddling a kayak/canoe is great exercise. The movements you make during paddling give your upper body an incredible workout. But even better than the rowing machine at the gym, you can do it in a beautiful environment.

2. Kayaking/canoeing allows you to appreciate nature. Not only are you enjoying the water and the serenity of the surrounding forests, but you may see a lot of wildlife that the average person never gets to see. You can experience the power of the water through rapids and whirlpools. You can learn a lot about our environment in these natural surroundings.

3. Kayaking/canoeing in white-water is full of adventure. Not only is this sport great for those in need of some serenity in their lives, but also for those seeking adventure. Few things can give you the adrenaline rush that paddling off a 20 foot waterfall can! Manoeuvring through white-water can take some skill, but the thrill is totally worth it.

4. Kayaking/canoeing is a great activity to share with friends.
When you're paddling a canoe with someone, you have to work together or you'll just go in circles. This activity can help build teamwork skills and communication skills. This is just one of those sports that is even better shared with others, not just for the camaraderie but also from a safety standpoint.

5. Kayaking/canoeing is a great competition sport.
If you have a healthy sense of competition then you might want to consider kayak/canoe racing. There a number of different styles or types of competition to fit different skill levels. It is a sport that has grown immensely in recent years and is continuing to grow.

6. Kayaking/canoeing is a great way to keep cool in the summer. On hot summer days, we tend to just hang out in front of the air conditioning. Out on a lake where a cool breeze might pick up or feeling the spray of the water on your face is a great way to keep cool and get exercise at the same time.

7. Kayaking/canoeing is a sport for any age:
Kids as young as 4 or 5 can learn how to paddle a kayak. Older individuals find it to be a relaxing form of exercise as well. This makes it a great activity for the entire family to enjoy together.

8. Kayaking/canoeing is just plain fun. Really what other reason do you need? Everything else is just an added bonus.

These are just a few reasons why kayaking or canoeing might be the perfect recreational sport for you. However, it is important to always be safe while on the water. Make sure your gear is safe and up-to-date. Never go out alone. Take a lesson or two to make sure you know how to do it properly. Join a local club that will help you learn more about the sport, as well as the best places to go and tips on how to maximize your experience. Sit back and enjoy yourself!
