Inspired by the nostalgia of the neighbourhoods of the “good old days” and the quintessential lemon tree in each quarter-acre section, Fruity Gumboot brings back the vibrancy of the fruit garden to promote a healthy, self-sufficient and simple Auckland family lifestyle.
Home gardens for functional uses were at their most popular in the 1940’s and 1950’s when a busy fruit and vege garden was a sign of a healthy, hard-working family.
A patch of land with a house and garden was the New Zealand dream for most of the 20th century. Both utilitarian and decorative, mum would often be the one tending the flower garden on public display at the front of the house while dad would look after the fruit and vege garden at the back. A good housewife was expected to be familiar with the various methods of cooking and preserving fruit, with bottling in particular keeping pantries well stocked 50 years ago.
So much has changed in half a century, with stunning and innovative varieties of fruit trees now available alongside your favourite heirloom varieties. Test your fruit tree knowledge (answers at the bottom of the page):
What are your memories of fruit and family? Do you remember helping mum to fill preserving jars of stewed apple? Perhaps heading out with a bucket of leftover apples to swap for black boy peaches with your neighbour? I remember our faithful grapefruit tree and my dad cutting them in half, sprinkling the tops with sugar and putting in the fridge to chill a little before we scooped out the segments with a teaspoon.
