If the Grandchildren don't already know how to grow veges....teach them! If they don't have a garden use pots!

Last summer we grew cherry tomatoes and stawberries in pots on the deck and had fruit from both for 4 months. Mr 5 year old happily ate those he picked and as we don't use any pesticides we knew it was safe as well as tasty! He also loved nabbing the 'stinkbugs' as they tried to eat his crops!

The strawberry plants have overwintered and started up again by themselves and we kept seeds from last years tomatoes... nice and easy and cost effective. One of the greatest gifts you can give the Grandchildren is a love of growing tihngs and nature.

by triple7 12th October 2010 I absolutely agree. My mokopuna has been growing strawberries, sunflowers, carrots and watermelon since she was 3. She is now 7 and an expert at it. Her favourit veg/ fruit is Moon and Stars watermelon and giant sunflowers. She has also learned that a traditionally grown vegetable or fruit is healthier for humans, animals and insects and using animal tiko and seaweed with worm waste keeps our soil healthy and desease free. My moko also knows how to make garlic spray and she know all about permaculture and companion planting. I have a leader in the making.
