I took Magic for a walk after supper.
It was a beautiful evening, calm and sultry.
Everything was so still.
The birds were having their usual choir practise.
Each one trying to out chorus the other.
Old Bella the house-cow
was having her evening scratch against the fence.
She had that far away look in her eye.
All dreamy like.
I'd get to relieving her of her milk later.
Magic and I just wanted to spend a few precious moments
with you at the close of day, this was to be our time.

Did you know we were there?
I'm sure you did.
It was so peaceful sitting there beside you.
Magic lay with his head on his two front paws
looking up at me every now and then
and when I spoke to you he'd nod his head
as though in agreement to what I was saying.
As we sat, the old dog and me
yesterdays came flooding back.

How you had worked this once broken down old house
into what it is today. You were tireless then.
We bided by your wishes.
There is no cold memorial granite stone
marking your resting place.
One day though, there will be a mighty oak.
'Tis only a sapling right now.
But it will grow mighty and straight
tall and strong as you were in life.
I miss you.
So does Magic.
You are here though
and we can come and be with you
talk with you
and still get to lay alongside of you.
Rest peacefully my love.
