ASK: to clarify

Like with tip number one, miscommunication starts when there is a general misunderstanding going on.

So how about the next time you’re not quite sure why you’re having a conflict, or not too sure about why there’s a misunderstanding, ask the teen for their side of the story. Ask to clarify that what you think they think is really what they’re thinking.

And then just listen. Let them tell their side, and then you will be able to tell yours! How easy peasy is that! And then take into account what you learned from their perspective, and try resolve the situation to best accommodate you and them.

Compromising isn’t hard – we do it every day with our friends, colleagues, partners, store owners – so do it with teenagers too!

Why? Only because teenagers are people too...
