Eric Bakker - Heartburn

Read more from Eric Bakker ND

Do you get heartburn?

In 1982, when Aussie Dr. Barry Marshall identified a new bacterium Helicobacter pylori as an infectious agent responsible for peptic ulcer disease, it completely transformed medicine’s understanding of the microbiology and disease of the human stomach. This clever little bug lives in the stomach wall, and secretes an alkaline bicarbonate solution which neutralises the acid around it.

Before 1982, the accepted medical paradigm was "no acid, no ulcer", and that stomach ulcers only occurred when excess acid damaged the stomach wall and that all treatment should be aimed at reducing or neutralising that bad acid. Today it is an established fact that most cases of peptic ulcers and gastritis, diseases that affect millions of humans worldwide, potentially result from this H.pylori infection, and not “too much acid” in the stomach. Unfortunately, many such patients today are still seen as having “too much stomach acid”, and treated with antacids or stomach-acid blockers as front-line therapy, when in my clinical experience actually the opposite applies! Most people as they age have decreasing levels of acid, not increasing. As many as 20% of Kiwis may be infected with H. pylori, and prevalence is age related, since the percentage of persons colonised is roughly equivalent to age. When I see those advertisements on TV at night regarding “too much acid” in the stomach, I can’t help but thinking if some of those sufferers possibly have an undetected H.pylori infection.

How do you know if you have this bug?
Generally, you may present with symptoms such as nausea, bloating, lots of burping, heartburn, maybe diarrhoea or constipation. After being infected for several years, you may have disturbed sleep, altered appetite and develop mineral deficiencies which can lead to a myriad of health problems. Is it any wonder, how is an ailing stomach is supposed to do its job, i.e., digesting and absorbing foods efficiently when a bacterial infection is causing such dysfunction? Your doctor may have initially prescribed a medicine such as Losec, Gavascon or Mylanta for your stomach, serving to block acid or dilute it. How is your tummy supposed to work at all now? Then you go back and complain that the symptoms are unchanged. What then?

How do you treat this bug?
You need checking out, and can be tested for H.pylori. The problem here is that a test may come back negative and be a "false negative" for many reasons, for example you may have been taking a medication for some time which has suppressed this bug, giving the impression that all is well when in fact it isn't. Other causes need to be excluded through a comprehensive history taking and examination. Triple therapy (which include antibiotics) is generally employed, yet no clear indications exist for treatment of each individual case of H. pylori-associated gastritis. Complete eradication is difficult, even with a combination of bismuth and antibiotics and/or natural medicines. I have had several patients who have come to me after having had triple therapy with poor results, the recurrence rate can be very high indeed making one feel that it is "all in the head" rather than the stomach. I recommend an eight-week course of treatment designed specifically for the individual, with promising results for many patient. And what a relief, to be free of heartburn, bloating and that “awful feeling in the tummy” again.

by brenda1 22nd June 2008 Salt helps stop ulcers, aids digestion, and helps you sleep. It also helps your tummy, and helps stop bacterial infections.
by Eric 22nd June 2008 Hi Brenda, Good point. Sodium chloride helps with digestion indeed, but do get Sea Salt or Himalayan Salt & avoid pure salt from the supermarket which is very refined and devoid of minerals except sodium chloride. Sodium is very important for the body to balance potassium, and can even help regulate blood pressure. It is not common for sodium to elevate BP, contrary to what most doctors think. I recommend to eradicate helicobacter pylori these things: grapefruit seed extract, gum mastica and lactoferrin and sometimes a few other things.
by MUFFY 24th June 2008 as I am allergic to penicillin my triple therapy dose had to be altered. I have tried twice to eradic this from my stomach without any success. my specialist has said I will need a combination of four antibiotics if I want to have another try..I don't want to do this as I know it will make me feel so sick..however at times I do worry about further problems occuring if I do not address the problem..I seem to just carry on in the hope that it will "go away!"..what form does the grapefruit seed extract come in..
by Eric 30th June 2008 Hi Muffy, You will find that Drs generally recommend drugs as primary treatment. You can eradicate H.Pylori with natural means, but would be best to see a naturopath & follow their guidance. H.Pylori is a stubborn bug and the recurrence is quite high but it is possible to eradicate it never the less. The GSE is in a liquid form, and is best taken as part of a protocol in drop doses, about 10 - 15 drops two to three times daily. Lactoferrin is very important, and so are the other products. See your naturopath, I may be able to put in touch with one as I network up with many throughout NZ.
by sillynillu 4th July 2008 i suffer from heartburn and have been to my gp many times only gone away with losexc and told deifferent alternatives such as soda water peppermint essence etc does to much caffiene affect that area
by pudsey 8th July 2008 You say "The GSE is in a liquid form, and is best taken as part of a protocol in drop doses, about 10 - 15 drops two to three times daily. Lactoferrin is very important, and so are the other products." Do I ask a naturopath for these products? Have been on Losec for 10 years and treated with antibiotics twice and no better. Would like to know who is a genuine giver of treatment.
by curio 11th July 2008 I have tried the GSE for about 5 days and it made me feel dizzy and very unbalanced. Is this normal? Would it be ok to carry on taking it with those symptoms? Could you let me know the natural prod I need to treat H. Pylori?
by brenda1 13th July 2008 You might find vitamin c in fruit helps correct the situation. It helps get rid of or stop infections. It helps correct the acid balance.
by brenda1 13th July 2008 Thanks Eric. I do use sea salt. I found that information helpful. I am having to try and rebalance my salt and potassium balance, as well as get my vitamin c level back in balance as well.
by Delta 20th July 2008 Hi Eric, Could you please recommend a Naturopath ic ChCh. Have had years of all symptoms and am getting completely fed up with reflux etc.
by brenda1 27th July 2008 Are you on a low fat diet Deita? Are you using a low fat milk? If so, change back to the whole milk, and you should be okay.
by Eric 4th August 2008 I forgot to mention - heartburn can actually be caused by - an underactive stomach. That's right, a low-acid condition rather than "excess acid" as we have ben lead to believe! If your heartburn is relieved after taking lemon juice in water, or apple cider vinegar in a little water, you will find this particularly to be the case. If you burp, bloat or feel quite full around meals, then try either of these two remedies. Do you really want to know if you have excess acid? Then you are most likely to be relieved by something VERY alkaline, lke raw potato juice, or a little raw cabbage juice. Eric
by Delta 5th August 2008 Thanks for the reply brenda1. Have been on soya milk for years, cannot tolerate lactose. Have just been advised by the local health shop to try barley grass, so am doing that, plus taking pepperment gels once a day - so here's hoping. Sometimes feel like the whole lining of my stomach has been burnt off!
