Multiple Sclerosis Society of Auckland

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Auckland is a not for profit organisation that raises awareness and supports the many people living with this debilitating condition in the Auckland region. Our mission is to reduce the impact of MS in our community and improve the quality of life of people with MS.

We offer an extensive range of information, services and emotional and practical support to those having to make the huge lifestyle adjustments that come alongside living with Multiple Sclerosis. In addition we also strive to provide people with information and resources promoting, health, exercise and wellness all of which have been proven to minimise the effects of Multiple Sclerosis.

Not only do we improve the quality of life for the individuals themselves but support and information are available and provided to family, friends, carers, colleagues and employers.

Our services include:
- One on one support from our team of Field Workers
- Hydrotherapy & Yoga classes
- Discounted Gym Membership Scheme
- Educational seminars and workshops
- Social and Recreational Activities for people with MS (and their family and friends)
- Resource Information

We are continually fundraising to maintain and develop our services – events include an annual street appeal, fundraising lunches / dinners, our annual Footloose Funwalk (sponsored walk) and an annual Art Exhibition. In addition to our fundraising initiatives we also run an extensive volunteer programme.
Please contact us if you would like to get involved with any of these programmes.

About Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a degenerative neurological disorder that affects the central nervous system. The symptoms of MS are unpredictable, and may lead to disability.
• There are around 4,000 people with MS in New Zealand
• MS is commonly diagnosed in early adulthood, with symptoms usually appearing for the first time between the ages of 20 and 40 years
• It is rare to have a diagnosis before the age of 15 and onset is unusual in people over 50 years of age
• MS affects approximately 2.5 women for every man
• MS is thought to be caused by a dysfunction of the immune system, resulting in the body’s own cells attacking the myelin coating that insulates the pathways of the central nervous system
• MS is not an inherited condition, although it is thought that some people may have a genetic susceptibility to develop this disease

There is no typical pattern of MS disease, although the appearance of symptoms can follow a relapsing-remitting or progressive course. Some of the symptoms that are commonly associated with MS include:
• Blurred or double vision
• Fatigue
• Numbness
• Pain
• Loss of strength in muscles
• Loss of balance or co-ordination
• Tremor, muscle spasticity or spasm
• Incontinence
• Mood changes

There is currently no cure for MS. Disease-modifying drugs, such as beta-interferon, aim to reduce the frequency of disease relapses and prevent progression. Treatments are available for some MS symptoms, such as muscle spasms, pain, or mood changes. Some people with MS benefit from lifestyle changes aimed at improving their well-being, including exercise, dietary changes, stress and symptom management.
