We were living at Dillmanstown, just out of Kumara when the earthquake struck. It was terrifying and went for sooooo long, or so it seemed. We were lucky and had no damage except in the garden. Hubby had a row of large cabbages and the stalks all broke in the quake. A local taxi driver (Mr Hales) was also killed. He drove out to Runanga to check on relatives and the road on to the over bridge between Greymouth and Coal Creek had dropped by about 18 inches and he hit it at speed and was killed.

There were also a couple of deaths when a helicopter rescue went wrong and crashed.

Born and bred in Frankton, Hamilton. Spent alot of childhood days at our bach in KAWHIA...hasn't been extended like Raglan. Did my nursing career in Rotorua (mmm..da smell!). Lived in Papamoa for 7yrs, was nice and quiet in those days, seeing it now is unbelievable!! My mum is from a place called TeAhuAhu inland up North from Ohaewai, now that was soooo isolated and didn't like it much. Eventually moved over to Oz and resided in Toronto NSW for 23yrs which was a lovely township close to the largest salt water lake. Now I'm living in Wairakei TAUPO and gosh I still feel the cold!! We still go over to Kawhia as much as we can and enjoy the peace and catch up on whanau and heaps of SLEEP, my main attire over there is.....pyjamas!! Just love it. Nana Mu

Hi Pearly, our bach is situated at Maketu Marae, we are next to the Maori Queens house. Our bach was on top of the hill above marae for 10yrs then when the Queen's place was ready to go up Dad moved bach back down. Our whanau urupa is on top of the hill too where my mum and dad are along with a few more relatives. We are going over there this weekend for a LET THE FUN BEGIN get-together with Oz whanau and staying at the marae (bit easier for catering and facilities). Lovely walks around the area, go through the track to town and walks to the lagoon.

When the Inangahua quake struck, I was working in Wanganui at the Jubilee Home & Hospital (A Geriatric Hospital) as the night nursing orderly and it woke most of the residents. Took quite a while to settle them down. It didn't help that the 4 nurse aids in the women's wards were more terrified than the residents either.
