This poignant poem could be about anywhere in the world today,Ann. Even in Godzone where gang warfare is rife. A distant relation of my ilk was an infamous IRA member who was jailed. His wife and children was murdered by the other side while he did his time. On coming out he resigned from the IRA and he was gunned down in a telephone box, presumably as a traitor.

How very sad. the whole family gone, I can,t imagine what the the horror would do to a person. I feel very fortunate that I have not had to deal with anything like it.

Joybel, it's always sad for the women in this situation, who want only peace to bring up their families and grow old with their husbands. What happened to the women's peace movement that started in Belfast? I vividly remember that long ago in the 1970s an Irish family emigrated to the North Shore of Auckland, not too far from where we lived. The Maguires. They had lost children to the violence in Belfast, and had thought to build a peaceful life in New Zealand. Sadly. Anne Maguire could not leave the sadness of her old life behind. Even in the sunshine and safety of this country, she took her own life.
