Bring back Rail. If there was ever a time we needed trains it is now.A Few years ago I went to Westport from Christchurch by train. It was a magic trip. I would love to travel to Dunedin in the Southerner I would also love The Taeri Gorge Railway whilst there and the one around the North Otago CoastI always enjoyed The Tranz-Alpine trip and the Coastal Pacific to Picton.I miss the ferry Lyttelton--Wellington too..

You could only afford those trips occasionally, Dr. L. so dream on. It is lovely to travel by rail and is my favourite. However even shanks pony becomes worn at the withers as I am learning. Roads for motorists and cyclists, trains for all freight. Gas does not need to cost so much. It is people needs that drain the kitty and an overabundance of managers and CEOs. The more we think we require and can't do without the dearer it will become. What are rubbish dumps filled with these days?????

Joybel,"What are rubbish dumps filled with these days" Methane Gas. Thats one of the reasons why we are not supposed to build on old rubbish dumps and Why the likes of Bexley & Waimairi was turned into pasture and then parks.Methane from Burwood Landfill was heating QE2

At least methane gas is a reusable by product if harnessed safely. Not much can be done with all the electronic hardware, tyres, electrical appliances and other throw away manufactured stuff which is obsolete landfill.
The plastic cheap rubbish which I see at kids birthday parties and the paper and packaging used to make them look flasher is incredible. New businesses are born every day creating jobs from more and more of the planets resources and the $2 shops are proof of it.
How many of your restaurants are making a living these days. I bet pig farms are doing okay on the throwaways. Or are they serving up tomorrow. Chinese imports are keeping the landfill truckies in jobs. I suppose one could say it provides employment.

Thankfully in Christchurch we have recycling stations @all the Metro Stations and that has reduced the waste streams dramatically heading to Kate Valley As the Chairman of the 2 Committees(@ Local & Metropolitan level) who brought recycling to Christchurch in 1980s it has been a resounding success ie The Red Shed. and other initiatives.although it took ten years to become really successful. Originally the engineers wanted us to incinerate ALL.Finding markets for recycled material caused us a few headaches in 1980 Todays system is much better.

Do you ever remember Saturday afternoon @ The Bexley or Waimairi Dump waiting for the next trailer load of junk to arrive so you and the kids could do a bit of scavenging.? It was a Christchurch pastime.!One mans trash was anothers treasure.

You guys have digressed from the opening question.$5 a litre for petrol is way out.The only way you will get cheaper petrol is to cut out those greedy petrol barons.Of course why do you think John Key is allowing oil drilling in NZ? We don't like the idea of fracking. But if we want cheaper oil and petrol is to create vour own wealth. Then again,we may all be driving electric cars.Fancy! Complete silence on our highways. You could always utter Broom! Broom! As you went along. The subject of taking stuff to the dump.In Napier the dump prices are causing people to dump rubbish in other places. Even one of the council was photographed dumping old tellies in a park. She was sternly reprimanded. You don't have scavenging on your own either. The Napier dump .

would be crawling with flies and people
