I can just about recall Dad & Dave, the name at least.

During the NZ gold rush,we had quite a lot of Aussies come over & some of them were ex convicts so some of us share the Oz heritage of having an ancestral felon lurking in the family tree....mrgreen

Very interesting Dr Livingstone. I have to confess to a lot of ignorance of NZ history - or at least to any Australian connection with it. But we were certainly well educated in a censored version of Australian history.

As for Australian convicts.... well I don't have to worry about any lurking in my family, as it was only one generation Australian. But having huge genealogy problems going too far back because of language problems on one side, and the other side being Irish and all the destroyed records there, I started some time ago on my husband's family tree (for the kids 'sake) and I got the shock of my life at all the convicts who popped up!!

Of the 13 members of Michael Joseph Savages first Labour Government in 1935 five were born in Australia and had migrated to New Zealand between 1900 and 1907.They were Matk Fagan, William Parry,Robert Semple, Patrick Webb and Savage himself. In addition the previous leader of the Labour Party Harry Holland had crossed the Tasman in 1912

There's those Aussies again trying to claim all the fame! (or is it usually the other way round?)
Perhaps all the migration of NZers to oz is their natural heritage drawing them home - but that wouldn't explain all the Maori who have gone.

Poaching our Kiwis as Aussie icons we note Keisha Castle-Hughes was born in Donnybrook Western Australia.Sam Neill was born in Northern Ireland and Emily Barclay who was listed in FMH Magazine as one of the 50 sexiest women in Australia was born in the UK. but lived most of her life in NZ.And then we have Russell Crowe. who lived in Australia from 4 to 14 returned there at 21 and got his first acting jobs there.biggrin

G'day Tiz,

It would surprise you how many Aussie Maori there are. Maori started going over there in their droves in the 60's. My personl mate has 2 Aussie born kids then we have their Aussie born kids and that totals 5....so out of 1 Maori joker and his part Maori wife, we have 7 Aussie born kids. There will be thousands.

Cheers. biggrin

Crikey....Aussie Maori Wallabies V NZ Maori AB's what a rip snorter. coolcoolcool

Squirter, You raise some interesting facts there. In 2008 there were 100,000 Maori Australians people with Maori ancestry living in Australia.Maori Australians constitute Australias largest Polynesian ethnic group. In 1986 it was found that only 22% of Maori Australians spoke Maori at home. and that very few children spoke the language. Notable Maori Australians in Sport have included Tonie Carroll, Ted Goodwin, Wayne Scwass, Jeremy Paul, Timana Tahu, Jai Taurima,Paul Bower, Glen Panaho, Morgan Turinui,Manuel Edmonds, Tamaiti Horua, Leroy Houston, Alicia Poto,Quade Cooper, Carl Webb Tai McIsaac,Dustin Martin and there is an equally impressive list of other celebrities.Cheers, biggrin
