anyone out there with one of these systems. sounded great in sales pitch and cost good. have had probs with phone line since day 1 (7 weeks) and they keep fobbing me off and telling me my problem is unique and they are working on it. have asked for up-dates on what they are doing but ... get NOTHING. am getting pretty annoyed with lack of action. Main problem is I can't make local calls without sing area code.

Hi shellsmum,
yes, you must use the area code for making local calls. See here

What exactly other problems you are having?

Should be no need to use the area code for your local calling area (LCA). I had the same problem recently. My LCA should have been Kaikohe, but instead was Dargaville, causing the locals to pay for a toll call to my number in their LCA. In Northland, the LCAs are really tiny! Orcon reason was Telecom technicians get confused over which exchanges have been allocated what range of Orcon Genius numbers, however from the conversation which followed, their poor knowledge of geography is the real reason. Simple remedy: call Orcon customer service to get your LCA corrected, which will undoubtedly keep your local friends happy, BUT you will be issued a new phone number on the LCA exchange, which might make you very unhappy.

Orcon Genius is not perfect, so be aware, no matter what Orcon tells you, there will be times when heavy internet traffic DOES cause break up of speech during your VOIP telephone call. Rarely, the break up can be so severe that the call is lost entirely. But no great problem because uopn re-dialing you will establish a new path which will likely be better, and in my experience, the nationwide toll-free facility more than compensates for a few minor inconveniences.

I am with Slingshot's italk VOIP and have had very few problems.
After re-reading that forum link I gave to Shellsmum, I find it rather ambiguos, so I guess you don't have to use an area code prefix for localls.

Cheers, CB

With Xnet and VoIP i do not have to use area codes for local calls so i guess it is standard to not use the code for local calls.
