I have received a docx file from a trusted person attached to an email. It is a Word document but the attachment window states "unknown file type'.When I try to open this file I get an error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.Create an association in the Folder Options Control panel".I have tried to do this but to no avail.Am I doing something wrong somewhere? My email prog is Outlook Exp.and my O.S.is Windows XP.

What Word programme do you have. Word 2003 or earlier will not open a Docx file.

Hi totara,
Thanks for the quick reply.I have Word 2002 installed, purchased as part of bundle when I bought the PC in 2003.Probably only use it half a dozen times a year so have never bothered to update it/or purchase a later version. Are there "free" versions on the market? and would my PC suit it.
Thanks

Hi Piwi,
As far as I know, you can open docx files in Open Office. It is free and will open all microsoft Word documents.

Hi Piwi,
Microsoft have a small free programme to enable docx files to be opened in older Word programmes. I cannot remember what it is but try the Microsoft web site. It could be the Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office System. Totara.
