I know I am miles away, but I can add an interesting point here. In the U.K. S4C and BBC Alba, which provide programmes in Welsh & Gaelic respectively, both have EWnglish subtitles available for non speakers. However, the two Chinese channels on U.K. satelite are both in English.

Why in NZ., are Chinese TV channels not made to put subtitles in English as this is our official language? Understanding of other cultures is much easier if we can communicate. When spoken and written words are in a foreign language we are deprived of these channels
