Sounds like a porina grub rfern002, that turn into a brown flying beetle bug. We used to call them 'maybugs.' That's just a guess, without seeing it.

I had a student dig up a hole in our garden.
When he had finished,
on one side I found part of a caterpillar - like thing hanging down.
It was eerie - not an earthworm - but whitish grey-
thick as a finger ?
