I have dial up and accept that it is a bit slower. However this is the only site that i go to that jerks downwards all the time, particularly when i am writing something,so that when i click on a forum topic, the cursor jerks to the topic above.

I think what might be happening there, Emelle is that some of the images or banner up above in the page are taking longer to load.. so once they do the whole page gets shoved down.
Some times to make it load quicker I dis-able Javascript but that can cause probs when I forget and go to another site.

I am on broadband and must say that at times on Grownups I think it is slower than dial up.

It sure can be 'addictive', Kari.
Yeah, I guess there's sometimes when there's a lot of traffic, Joybel.
The point I was getting at is that this site uses 'transitional' coding which is what 'lazy web designers use. 'Strict' coding takes more skill and it cuts out a lot of crap. (But we like a lot of flash looking crap on our web sites.. makes them look good, eh.)
I guess the real skill is finding a balance- we need all those advertisers to enable this site to exist but it still has to be nice to visit.
There a new coding HTML5 due out. This is set to the standards of W3C (world wide web consortium).
Interestingly the W3C tries to set a stand for the web to be for all users regardless of device that is used or even if the user should be blind ie its for every one. But that's coding (or web design) at its best. Most web designers just wanna make it look pretty.

I changed to broadband thinking it would be heaps faster than dial up but I've been quite disappointed. I even changed providers as TelstraClear convinced me they had newer lines and it would be a lot faster than Telecom. Unfortunately that hasn't happened. Bummer!

Fern,I feel sorry for you,who has just switched over to Broadband, and not getting the satisfaction from it,as you should do.Telecom has given me speedy Broadband, and with it I have had no problems.I am not using my full quota of whatsits, but that doesn't worry me.I can check into My Telecom and find broadband usage,Telehone and Tolls, and I am more than satisfied.Maybe I am just tooo lazy, and dont expect too much out of life.It seems to be easier that way.

Glad to hear you are satisfied with Telecom, Mona. I'm a customer of theirs too. I've never had any problems.
Friends often scoff at me and ask why I don't change to their `better' providers. My answer to them is that someone has to be Telecom's customer
(but I'm with Telecom, still, because I've never had any problems).
Some of my friends chop and change providers all the time. I couldn't be bothered.
Gotta go to bed now. I should be back on the forums `properly' in a couple of weeks. That should please some ...
Take care!

This web site seems to be a pain for dial up users compared even to overseas sites that load heaps quicker.
I notice when doing a markup validation check that its pages are using 'transitional' which is the sloppiest standard and there are usually heaps (206) of coding errors.
I really do like the discussions in Grownups' but will grownups be getting better web designers in the near future?
