"I wince when I see the beautiful old bricks being smashed to the ground.I would like to store them somewhere and in the future, use them to make a memorial path and/or wall perhaps in the gardens.
By the way-the rich resort of Pauanui on the Coromandel peninsula is built entirely on a sand bar-there is no rock beneath it."

What an excellent idea Emelle - I hope this is done,it would be very fitting to remember the old buildings which have been lost.

Tabs 41 I don't know, but maybe try the Christchurch city council site, they may have information?

Building with second hand bricks was very much in vogue over ten years ago, here in Christchurch. My daughter and her husband built a home with them. They were all cleaned and ready to go and were distinctive from new ones. They probably ran out in time, but now it may begin a new craze and it would be a welcome change from what is classed as a building material today. There is something special and solid looking about bricks.

"I see that a number of appeal funds have been set up. Does anyone know how donations can be sent from UK?"

If the person wants to do a manual transaction he just goes to the English bank and tells them he wants to deposit funds into the New Zealand bank (whatever bank is taking the donations). However, there may be a minimum amount he can transfer and it will cost a fee.

It would probably be easier to do it online through one of the charities that are seeking donations wink

Thanks Belladonna / Going Grey
Have tried on line several times without success . I would think the appeals will still be running in six weeks time when I arrive in New Zealand so will have to wait till then.

Sorry, Tabs41. I thought you were asking on behalf of someone else (thinking you were on the Hibiscus Coast).

I'd say they'd be collecting for Christchurch for a long time yet. wink

Now the Hawkes Bay has been hit with a quake. Shaky Isles indeed. eek
