Like you, Smiley, we have all our LPs and 45s still. biggrin

We are hoping to purchase a new `stereo' that includes a record player (because, believe it or not `vinyl' has made a comeback) but everything is in that ugly black-box look so we're holding off at the moment.

We have a small portable record player in the den which we drag out from time to time. It takes us longer to choose a record to play than it does to play it!

"At Christmas a group of ex D'oyle Carte singers put on a concert performing favourite songs from Gilbert and Sullivan to a packed audience."

I used to be involved in `Centrestage' in Orewa and I loved it when they did G & S. Such clever shows. I only ever experienced one D'oyle Carte performance, many years ago. Wonderful!

Tabs41, it sounds like you enjoyed the shows, while in England. That's what I miss the most. You could go out every week and see a show or concert and for a pittance, compared to what we have to pay to see them when they come to New Zealand. Never mind, eh?

Yes it is a pity but we have to make do with what we have.
If you are interested the link below takes you to Grooveshark, a free site where you can search for music and store it in your own account.
They do have quite a few G&S numbers on there. Just enter the artist you want in the search box.

I wonder if I'm at the right thread here. Hope one of GUps can help in my quest. I've written a short story for my writing group about film stars of the 50's and made mention of the fact that in London when I was but a girl (!) films would run continuously. This meant that at times one would arrive in the middle of the film, sit there until the end then watch it through to the end again. There was a song by, I think, Danny Kaye about this very thing, ie 'This is film that starts in the middle for those who came in at the middle.! Anybody got any idea where I can get the lyrics. I've tried numerous websites, so far to no avail. Regards to you all, Pixie

I did a bit of a `googling' and came up with http://www.mudcat.org/ (the only website that was discussing lyrics to Danny Kaye songs).

It looks like you have to sign up to the forums but then you can start a new thread and ask questions about that particular song, movie or whatever.

This thread http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=16544&messages=73 (same website) is where they are all recalling Danny Kaye lyrics so it seems there are a lot of DK fans on the website.

It might be worth your while signing up and asking their members?

Good luck!

PS: You can't do it now but back in the 80's you could go into a movie cinema in the UK at any time of a film's showing like Danny Kaye's lyrics suggest. It was a good way of spending a miserable wet day. You certainly got your money's worth! wink

Went to the Daniel O"Donnell show, Mary Duff as quest artist, held at the Civic Theatre in Auckland, Another enjoyable concert as allways, It started at 7.30pm, 20minute interval about 9pm then Daniel was on again until 11pm, does the whole show himself, except for a few songs Mary did solo. Anybody else see the show??? and enjoyed as much as what I did!!!!!

In 2004 The Abbey Musical Theatre here in Palmerston North put on My Fair Lady. I was lucky to get a part and be involved in the Musical. I have never worked so hard and I now have great admiration for the talent that Palmerston North has. I thoroughly enjoyed being involved, but would never do it again as the training combined with work conmitments saw my getting around 3 hours sleep a day. The show was world class.

Ray004, have you always been involved in amatuer theatre?

Back in the 90s I was heavily involved with Centrestage Theatre, in Orewa. The local theatrical group I belonged to raised money for 30 years to eventually building their own `home'.

They, too, put on fabulous shows. It always amazes me how people will spend $80+ to go and see a `professional' show but jib at paying $20 or so to see a local production!

Some amateur groups have some amazing talent in their ranks. wink

The only difference between amateur actors and professionals is that professionals get paid. Just seen 'Dirty Dusting' at Whakatane Theatre. Funniest play I've ever seen. Three of my friends (ladies) well into the Gups age-groups gave a superb performance, never missed a beat. In the 80's we were in many plays together and I so admire them for still showing what we can do even with advancing age. Last show I did was 'Stepping out' - had to learn to tap-dance. What a hoot! Cheers Pixie
