Kai, Its not a big cafe but sits beside Rudolph Steiner School where my three grandchildren go to. My grandson is 18.6 years old and in his last year at the high school part. Its a great way to catch up each week as he lives over in Halswell whilst I am in east at Avonside. Cheers,Dr L. ps I have list of over 100 cafes I have been to that I am trying to update suburb by suburb.

With Seventeen walkers from my "The A-TEAM Fifty Somethings and a bit Walking Group we enjoyed walks along The Heathcote Rivers hidden gem tracks this morning for over ninety minutes. We especially enjoyed our visit to hidden gem "'SWAN LAKE' at 9 Ernlea Tce with its beautiful gardens lake and of course white swans. Also enjoyed our tour of Lotus Siam Healthcare Spa and Beauty which is part of this very interesting complex on its historic site.
Later 17 of The A-TEAM enjoyed the ambience food and coffee & Teas etc at South Librarys RED CAFE This is a must do experience and the library is well worth a visit. Carpe Diem. Dr L

Love this thread,,, gives us so many ideas for our next Kiwi holiday>>>.
A bit of an aside to cafes DR L,,, but do you remember Ferry Road in the late 1960s? I asked this ages ago on Gups ,before you were a member I think..
.
I Think it was cnr Rutherford street and Ferry road,,,,there was a Four Square Store Mr Galpins on One corner, and a GHB grocer on the other Owned By Mr Derek Prebble. There was also a wee drapery type shop near Prebbles GHB with a Miss or Mrs McGee as the owner /operator.
I believe now one corner there is home units and the other a
photography gallery???
Any help on this matter would be so well appreciated Thankyou..
Cheers Kai

Kai, Winelover. I have been doing talks on Jubilee Home & Hospital for some years. No it has not been moved apart from the Octagonal accomodation units designed by Samuel Hurst Seagar. These were bought dismantled and taken to Rangiora. A friend of Desis has it as a home now. We are going to get an update on it perhaps a photo. The Jubilee Hospital history is well documented. I will look it out. It sits today just off Bamford St in Broad St. It is owned by nearby Fish Industry firm Independent Fisheries possibly as future expansion. Woolston has some fascinating history what with Whalebone Cottage which sits beside Rutherford St/Ferry Rd cnr. and The Woolston Brass Band beginnings and George Bonnington s home in nearby Maronan St (now demolished) and historic Oddfellows Lodge building and The Nugget Factory. Also in a lovely historic brick two storey shop on Catherine St /Ferry Rd cnr was an historic boot shop now one of this cities finest cafes/delicatessans and salmon factory. "HOLY SMOKE" Kai, I will look into grocery shops history where you say and see what I find. I plan to do a Jubilee Hospital Walk in my new programme I am working on for Spring. Cheers, Dr.L.
