Can all you folk who are obviously slow cooker converts please tell me why? Is it a cheaper form of cooking - does it take less power to cook a meal for 6 or 8 hours in a slow cooker than it does in the oven for 2 hours? Is it a time thing - like you can put it on & go away & forget it til teatime? Why are you all hooked on this method of cooking? I'd love to know.

@#99 Noeljen. I'm not sure whether it is cheaper because I have never done the math. However, you can do this for yourself by comparing the wattage of the crock pot (either on high or low setting) and comparing it with the wattage of the alternative cooking method over the relevant periods of time.

For me, the main attraction is to be able to put it on in the morning, go away and fill the day with other activities, and then come home to a ready cooked and very appetizing meal that so long as it is cooked on the low setting, cannot be 'over done.'

Food preparation can be minimal yet the end result is flavorsome and depending on the dish, can be served with very little additional effort.
My favourite is lamb shanks wrapped in bacon with a little garlic or mint (cooked in an oven bag in the crock pot) with 'roast potatoes' done in the deep fryer along with veggies zapped in the microwave â?? maybe an extra 15 minutes work after I get home.

I totally agree with you Amargein. Had many a great meal from the slow-cooker. Ordered the Joan Bishop cookbook and will certainly cook some recepies from this thread. First time I see this thread. Thanks to all of you who put in those lovely recepies.razz

Thanks Armagien & Dutchy for your replies. I guess I'll just have to try it for myself. My son gave me a slow cooker for Christmas & at my age it's hard to change things that work well for some unknown reason. I guess it's like when microwaves came on the scene - my Mum wouldn't touch them or eat anything that was cooked in one. So I guess I just have to " give it a go"
