Green Goddess (arum-type lily)
Chinese Woodland Poppy
The above plants are driving me crazy. I foolishly ordered them from a mail-order nursery many years ago. Both plants sounded really great, but there was no warning that they could eventually become a menace in my garden. I simply can't get rid of them now. The Green Goddess lily growns to a huge height (sometimes as tall as me!) and has spread all over our farm. Even the smallest piece of root will grow.
The Chinese Woodland Poppy I bought originally because it was recommended as an attractive plant to grow under rhododendrons, azaleas, etc. Sure, it was but now it creeps under concrete paths, under the house, and comes up just everywhere. Again, the smallest piece of root will grow anywhere and it's a constant battle to keep these plants at bay. Does anyone know of an effective way of getting rid of them, for once and for all? (Short of bringing in a bulldozer?) Would really appreciate some constructive help...also think that plant nurseries should warn prospective buyers that, depending on what part of the country they live, these plants can become really invasive nuisances!

Hi Jillian,
Sounds like you have real battle going on. The Chinese Poppy is on the regional council of Aucklands pest list. I am sure they will help you with this. It reminds me of a similar pink plant called Anenome Japonica which travelled along under the soil and popped up anywhere. I had to dig it out.The Green Goddess is a variety of the Calla Lily. The suggestion is to dig out small infestations. I wonder if Roundup would do the trick. I am guessing you live in Northlands where the climate is just so good for Chinese plants. Good Lucksad
