I am home safe from my snowy night in Springfield. And then a rude awakening at 4.30 am this morning.
A few broken glasses which is very insignificant by some folks loss here.

Power has just come back on and and have finally made contact with Grannystitcher, both she and Hoover are fine with little damage.
As for Dick and I some crystal got smashed but 3 pieces of Royal Doulton just slide from their usual place and quietly came to rest on the carpet undamaged. Wardrobes spewed out their contents but that is not a biggy and the kitchen cupboard will have to be repacked, again not a huge task.
Th buildings in the center of Christchurch are just unbelievable in the damage they have sustained. Three friends of mine in the antique business have lost their shops and will have much of their inventory trashed by broken bricks and plaster.
Some the bridges around the city are unsafe as are some of the roads with big cracks in them.
Dick's nephew woke to find his hallway had sunk below floor level, gives a new meaning to split level in his house!!!!
I must really give unstinting praise to the Christchurch Police, St Johns, Civil Defence and other organisations in the way they swung into action without a moments hesitation.
Then there is the people of Canterbury who came knocking on doors and assisting neighbours if they needed it. Many of us went and checked on our local business people in our areas to make sure their property was either o.k. or needed attention or just to give it security until the owners could arrive and take over.
This frightening event has probably made the people of Christchurch and beyond much tigher, caring communities so from that point of view neighbourhoods will be better off and more able to cope with the clean up.
Thank you to the people who took the time to wish us all well down here, your comments are really appreciated and have helped hearten us for the tasks ahead.
