Is there anyone here who does needle lace? Needle lace is the making of lace motifs using needle & thread over predrawn motifs. Motifs are dfwn on paper & secure onto card with a product such as coverseal. The foundation row is secured through all layers & the rest of the patern is stitched on top of cover seal following the pattern. When the motif is finished the securing threads are cut away releasing the motif.

You can use a variety of cottons e.g. perle 8 or 12,crochet cotton or other similar. Stranded threads are not suitable.

Years ago when on our OE I stopped to watch some Belgian women making bobbin lace. It was a tourist attraction and the women were dressed in long dresses with lace shawls and caps. The speed of those fingers working the bobbins was a marvel to watch. I was not inspired though. Tatting is another fascinating skill which I attributed to a bygone age. I enjoyed crochet and made several doilies. The filet style I loved the most. My mother was very clever and if we saw a shawl we liked in a shop we would take mum there and she would examine the shawl to see the design, then go home and make it up. Needle lace has a number of various methods each one different and a tribute to those ladies of long ago. I have a drawer with many pieces of crochet in it and the girls are not wanting them, but I am not allowed to give them away, as they were made by me and grandma. redface
