Our favourite camp-ground is Pelorus Bridge between Blenheim & Nelson, closely followed by Peel Forest just out of Geraldine. Balmoral Reserve is also very good at $5 a night, no power, just toilets & water. Arthur's Pass, at the Hawdern & Andrew's streams are free and good, lots of sand flies. I we love all the DOC camps as there are plenty of walks, Slab hut creek, Goldsborough, and to a lesser degree Marble hill all have gold, you'll need a pan, shovel, and may be a sluce box. If you go to Karamera you must go to the limestone arches, about 20 minute walk, free, also while there go through Honey comb cave, expensive but we enjoyed it, the roof in one part is open and mowa, deer and other animals have fallen through the roof and died down there. At Kaikoura there is a small cave at the cave restaurant which is worth a visit.

I would direct you to silvia flats on the lewis pass rd going north ,a small area a few ks past the boyal river recreation area.First blue picnic sign past boyal river recreation area At the end of the parking area walk along stony track to some hot pools that have been dug out of the shingle best used at night because of mozzies. Its possible to put you hand in the cold river while sitting in the small pools .All for free
