I have to read out a poem that will take 6 - 8 minutes but can't find a suitable one that is the right length, any ideas?

It all depends on the time frame you have before the event. You could go to your public library and browse their collection; You could write one of your own; or you could try filling the required time with what is referred to as a "Found Poem." A found poem is any piece of prose (say from a newspaper) that you can adjust the line length and the pauses as you desire. It would just be a matter of finding a piece you like or are comfortable with and use that. Keep in mind that you will be able to use pauses and speed of delivery to adjust to the time frame you have. All the best.
