Down to the City
I went down to the City today -
Left my tree filled, bird song filled
Tranquil hillside eyrie and
Ventured into the hustle, bustle
Rustle engine of the Capital.
I eased myself in with a visit
To an art gallery - amazing talent
On display, home grown talent
Not imported from a different time and place. Relevant art which both excited
And amazed me.
Next a museum of the City and the Sea.
I loved the old sea captain's cabin
Which I walked inside
And entered another kind of life
In another space of time.
I stood at the vast wheel
Of a long ago sailing vessel
Complete with tilted deck.
A break for coffee with time
To people watch.
When did everyone get younger,
Why the cell phones clamped to the ear
As if work in the city wasn't stressful enough.
Then into a book store
Oh what joy - all those silent
Voices calling to me - pick me! pick me!
I eventually chose a volume
By a local author and poet
Before being swamped by the
Lunchtime pavement fillers.
Each one on a personal mission.
No time for a smile or a chat.
Suddenly the realisation came -
I want to go home
Back to my house on the hill.
I know the city is down there
I'll even go to the theatre
One day - soon - not now!
