Hi Debbie,
I have found out all sorts of tips since I posted my query.Alexandria is about 3 hours by road from Cairo. We decided it will be better to stay the night in Alexandria. The cemetery is about 1/2 hour from A.The Commonwealth War Graves in U.K. were really helpful.I would love to hear from you after your May visit.Let me know if you need CWG emails etc.Thank you for your interest.Regards, Pamela

Hi Debbie, steve@twgp.org sent me a huge amount of info and photographs of the complete cemetery.I asked for an individual photo and he organised it for me.The individual photo came from sue.woolhouse@cwgc.org . I am sure you will find lots to interest you.

We have just got back from Egypt visiting the tombs and temples,we really wanted to visit El Alamein but to go from Cairo to there was a real hassle DO NOT Travel on their trains . Stay in your tour group and be very careful in Cairo. The tombs and temples was very good except the english-speaking guides are almost unintelligible but they are very obliging.(if you can understand them) and the signs are all in english as well as arabic which helps a lot.Take a supply of isolyte with you as you WILL get (WOG GUTS) sooner or later. And expect to put your hand in your pocket for tips again &again &again. But the tips dont have to be large (about 25 to 50 cents nz for porters ) but guides expect a lot more

We finally did this visit to El Alamein last year. It was a beautiful place in a country that is like a tip!!! Yes, even around the Sphinx and Pyramids there is lots of rubbish. Egyptians do not seem to notice. The Cemeteries are tended by the Commonwealth War Graves Commision and are pristine. We have been to Gallipoli and the River Kwai but El Alamein is the most moving. It is really worth a visit

Has anyone visited the Commonwealth War Cemetery at El Alamein in Egypt? Would we need to stay overnight in Alexandria or can we access it in a day trip from Cairo?
