That's quite an interesting thought, there, beachbum.
It is said that time is purely relative at the best of times.
The lttle Himalayan unit looks pretty good - on paper.
I notice that you are from Christchurch. How did you get on in the 'quake ??
We live in St. Albans and, while we got very little damage in the original event, these after-shocks are taking their toll on our 90-years-old house - and its two 70-years-old occupants.
Last I heard was that we had had well over 2100 of the follow-ups, even though not all of them were not big enough to be felt - thank goodness.

2367.. according to chch quake map, ron.

Geonet has good info too.

We've in woolston and been lucky..so far. A few hairline cracks and the chimney has cracks around the base by the roof line. I had the fire service come and check it out. They said it was still attached..so thats good.
I think we are all tired of those after shakes, eh.
As for that 'toy train' I think I might try printing it at half size. Might be too small but I'll give it a go and see.

Yeah, I do a quick check on geonet twice a day, the messages come through to my In-box.
Good to read that you didn't have too many problems with the shakes.
We don't have any chimneys, as such, just a metal flue for the log-burner.
It reminds me of a dream that I had a few years ago. It was so vivid that I really thought that it was for real, at the time.
Some time through one night, I dreamed that there was a big 'quake taking place, rather like the recent one, I would imagine.
I can still recall "hearing" the lounge chimney crashing down into our bedroom and I remember 'saying' to my wife "Well, there goes the chimeny".
I woke up in a real lather and then realised that it was only a dream because that particular chimney had been removed some years previously.
I don't mind admitting that, a the time, it was right scarey, though.

Not much doing here.
We finally had the EQC assessors through the house last Friday and, no, it doesn't have to be demolished.
They seemed to think that the necessary repairs can be done for under NZD$10 G.
We would have preferred it if they had said over that figure because, then the whole thing would be handed over to Fletcher's.
With the lower figure we have all the hassle of getting repair personnel and, apparently, if the repairs exceed the value of their estimae [the sum that they pay us] we have to foot the bill.
Not funny.

New to this discussion though have had a lifelong interest in railways. No layout but my home office (in a town house) is full of Minitrix (mainly Bavarian) in the hope that the next house will have room for a layout. But reason for joining is for alerts on exhibitions in the Auckland area.
Cheers

Hi Russell. Just like to join in and say that I have been an Architectural/Industrial modelmaker all my working life and now I am looking forward to modelling without deadlines:-) I have bits and pieces to construct a 009 gauge model of the Lynton & Barnstaple line in UK. Also into live steam with a partly constructed 5" gauge 4-6-0 loco and tender.

Well, we got the estimate, and the cheque, from the EQC last week but we are calling for a re-inspection.
We reckon that the jokers who did the original one didn't write up several of the items that we discussed.
And, No, we don't think that we are being greedy or opportunist, especially that several more cracks have appeared since they did their check.
We have had quite a few earthquakes since the date of their first look and are not the only people who reckon that we are still getting either new damage, or existing damage is being exacerbated.
When will it end ?? Who knows ???
We have had two more, today. Not big ones, I agree [in fact neither of us felt either of them] but they must act on structures in a cumulative way.

I read somewhere its due to diminishing time ie when you're 5 a year is a fifth of your life, when 20 a twentieth and when 50 a fiftieth.
I thinking of making this my next project:

I like trains but dont consider myself a great enthusiast.. but I know someone who might like this little beasty.
Odd thing about the wheels though..
