While in the historic French village of Akaroa last month I decided to do something I had never tried before – a side car ride.

“A Classic Ride” operator, Richard Lovett, offers tours to suit individual needs.  In my case, I decided on a one hour scenic journey up around the coastline.

Helmets are provided and you can either sit in the side car or behind Richard, which I choose to do, so I could take lots of photos.

Richard and Sue also offer boutique accommodation and fine dining at Matua Gardens Retreat.  For further information go to www.matuagardens.co.nz.

In the afternoon I boarded “Black Cat” for a 2 hour harbour cruise.

A pod of dolphins followed us down to the mouth of the harbour.

The volcanic rock formations can be clearly seen around the huge cliff faces creating amazing patterns and colours.

New Zealand fur seals could be seen sunbathing on rocky outcrops near Seal Bay.

For “Black Cat” timetables and further information check their website: www.blackcat.co.nz

I finished my day with a wander along the shore line calling into some of the local shops.

Akaroa is around 90 minute drive, 75 kms from Christchurch.  There is a variety of accommodation on offer from motor camp to boutique bed and breakfast.
