Going grey gracefully

While it’s all too easy to painstakingly pluck out silver hairs in the mirror or constantly pencil in trips to the hairdresser, have you ever considered simply letting your greys have their way? Chances are, you’ll love the new silver-haired you.

Here’s our guide to greying gracefully.

The absolute first step is to embrace the experience of going grey. Letting your silver hairs shine through is an empowering process that reflects your life and supports personal growth. If you’re looking for inspiration we love this book from Anne Kreamer, a Brooklyn based writer who documented her 18-month experience in “Going Grey: What I Learned about Beauty, Sex, Work, Motherhood, Authenticity, and Everything Else That Matters.” It’s a mouthful, but it’s definitely worth a read.

Seek help from your stylist

If you already have a go-to stylist they’ll be more than happy to chat about making the transition to grey. If you haven’t got a stylist you trust, chat to friends and see if you can drum up any recommendations. Often, they’ll suggest highlights to help blend the emerging grey into your existing colour. This helps to smooth over the growing-out phase and facilitate a natural transition. Another option is to simply dye your hair lighter and lighter until eventually, your greys are almost unnoticeable.

Consider a chop

Hair grows surprisingly fast, which means that opting for a shorter style isn’t as dramatic as it seems. Bobs and pixie cuts are a great way to simply get rid of your coloured hair and transition to grey as fast as possible.

Give yourself a makeover

As you age it’s all too easy to slip into style patterns. The reality is that often, it’s time to make a change. Deciding to go grey is also an amazing opportunity to overhaul other aspects of your look. Whether it’s updating your haircut, revamping your wardrobe or simply switching up your lipstick, small changes can make an incredible difference.

Learn to love salon products

While you may have settled for Herbal Essence haircare in the past, salon-inspired solutions can work wonders on grey (or partially grey) tresses. Using blue shampoo once or twice a week is a great way to keep your hair looking bright and brass-free, while others are designed to keep silver locks looking shiny and smooth.
