THE GREY

LABEL:                 Icon

RELEASE DATE:     5 December 2012
STARRING:             Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney
CATEGORY:           Thriller
RRP DVD:              $39.99
RRP BluRay:           $39.99

Liam Neeson is back in The Grey – a jaw-dropping action thriller set against the backdrop of the harsh Alaskan winter.

Ottoway (Liam Neeson) is forced to lead a group of men in their fight to survive, when their plane crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. They must battle injuries, merciless weather and a vicious pack of wolves defending their den before their time runs out.

The Grey approaches the genre in a unique way and the sentiment is echoed by the director and Neeson. "There's really no good or evil in the film – there simply 'is'," says director Joe Carnahan. "The wolves are protecting their den while the men are just trying to survive."

"The Grey triggered something very primal inside of me," says Neeson. "My character has a specific relationship to these wolves. He works on the refinery's fence line and his job is to make sure the animals don't approach the men at work. What weighs heavily on Ottoway's mind is that, perhaps, the wolves are now coming for revenge."

The 'survival story' aspect of the film was also key to Carnahan's process. "I wanted something that had deeper meaning, something that questioned nature and life and God. The wolves are part of that. They're as omniscient and all powerful as the rivers or the blizzards or anything else they encounter. I wanted to show these men as interlopers, the clash of industry versus the natural world. The centre piece of the film is definitely these men and their journey. But I also wanted it to be more than just an interesting action film in which the audience knows where it's going."

Described by Roger Ebert as "stunning", The Grey, directed by Joe Carnahan (The A-Team,Smokin’ Aces) and produced by Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Prometheus), is a gripping, man-versus-nature action thriller that will have audiences sitting on the edge of their seats.

Dodge is a man who has always played by the rules of life, while Penny his neighbour is an extroverted woman who hasn't. From these opposite perspectives, both initially choose to navigate the impeding end of the world with blinders on. Dodge declines joining his friends in increasingly reckless behaviour while Penny fixates on her relationship issues with a self-absorbed musician.

The two misfits first meet when Penny has a rough night and then again when she belatedly delivers Dodge a lost letter. The letter could alter Dodge's future; it's from his high-school sweetheart Olivia, the love of his life. When a riot breaks out around their apartment building, Dodge realises he must seek Olivia out before it is too late while Penny makes the decision to spend the last days with family in England. Seizing the moment, Dodge promises to help Penny reach her family if she will provide transport for the two of them. She agrees and they escape.

THE ZOO: 2012

LABEL:                 TVNZ
RELEASE DATE:     5 December 2012

CATEGORY:           Special Interest
RRP DVD:              $34.99

New Zealand’s family viewing favourite, The Zoo, is back! But this time, it’s all new on The Zoo. All the action at Auckland Zoo is now shot in HD and special cameras have been installed to capture exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.

As well as catching up with the animals and their day-to-day routines, the keepers go into the field, as they release endangered birds onto islands in the Hauraki Gulf and assist with the Rena oil disaster rescue operation.

The cameras are there as tigers rip into a fresh deer hide piñata, Burma the elephant swims in a fresh lagoon, and kune kune pigs enter the lion’s den – literally. Young giraffe Jelani heads off over the ditch on his big OE while his mum Rukiya gives birth to his 1.8 metre-long leggy sister Nakuru.

It’s all happening this season on The Zoo.
