Chapter Two

“You spoke with eloquence but you left them without with clarity, focus, passion and commitment because you lacked it yourself. You know it is not possible to draw water from a dry well.”

In Chapter Two Oliver leads Alex into a discussion about clarity, focus, passion and commitment.

Below is an exert from Chapter Two.

“When you see the field you see things with clarity. You are able to channel your passion and commitment into the event facing you. This only comes about because you have clarity. When you are clear about who you are and what you are and what you can and cannot do, then you begin to see the field. Your speech today was good. However it felt like you could take it to another level. You were performing well within yourself but you were not able to take your audience to a new place for them to grow and develop as a result of your message. You spoke with eloquence but you left them without with clarity, focus, passion and commitment because you lacked it yourself. You know it is not possible to draw water from a dry well.”

They walked round the small lake in the centre of the park. The pace was slow and the sun was once again sitting low on the horizon. They walked in silence for a few minutes.

Alex knew Oliver was right. In fact, now that he thought about it he knew it about eight hours ago when he sat down and those gathered at that breakfast event applauded. Alex knew he was a good speaker, perhaps even better than most, but all the same, Oliver was right. He had performed well personally but not in way that really, truly motivated his audience. He was not proud of the fact that he could have delivered a more powerful and effective message rather than a nice professional presentation.

After a few minutes of silent walking Alex asked, “Ok. I understand what you mean. I even agree with you. So, how do I see the field?”

They walked a moment in silence and Oliver said, “Clarity. Everything starts with clarity.”

Alex paused, and then asked hesitantly “What does clarity mean to you?”
