After oxygen, your body needs water the most. Your body depends on water to survive – it is crucial for optimal function. Overall, the human body is 72% water of which:

  • muscles are 75% water
  • blood is 82% water
  • lungs are 90% water
  • brain is 76% water
  • bones are 25% water

During the day, we are encouraged to sip away on non alcoholic and un-caffeinated beverages, and snack on fresh fruit and vegetables to keep up our hydration levels. At night however, we fast, not only on food, but also water while we are asleep, which can lead to dehydration, particularly in hot and humid weather.

If you drink lots of water during the day, an overnight liquid fast isn’t a major problem. It’s important to note that water plays an important role in the proper general functioning of your body, so always start the day with a large glass of water or two. The benefits of doing so include:

Re-hydration

After seven or eight hours of sleep, your body will be somewhat dehydrated. Drinking water shortly after waking up helps increase the flow of oxygen, and aids in the production of muscle and blood cells.

Enhance your digestive system

Drinking at least one large glass of water in the morning – can boost your body’s metabolism by up to 24%, which can aid in maintaining a healthy weight.

Simply, water helps to fill your stomach. Drinking a big glass of water before meals, can help you to eat less, and avoid over-eating.

Further more, when you drink water in the morning before breakfast, you help your kidneys function at an optimum level and you’ll encourage healthy bowel function, allowing nutrients to be absorbed more easily.

Avoid brain fade

When you’re dehydrated, your brain is operating on low fuel. Dehydration on even a small level can have a significant impact on brain function, which can cause you to feel tired, drained, may lead to headaches, and you may even experience mood fluctuations.

Staying hydrated is important to keep your body healthy, energised and running efficiently. If you find the taste too bland, add a slice of lemon, lime or orange, fresh mint leaves or a dash of coconut water. You may like to try carbonating fresh water at home for a variation. Cheers!
