Revive or reinvent?

People are attracted to coaching and self-development courses for a variety of reasons. In some instances it is to take stock of changing life circumstances and find evidence-based ways of dealing with change – to “revive and thrive” if you like.

But some of us also become dissatisfied with responding in the same way to events and circumstances and we wish to find new ways to live our lives – or if you like, to “reinvent ourselves”. This often comes from the thinking that if we always do what we always have done, we’ll always get the outcomes in our lives that we’ve always had. At some point we become motivated to break the pattern and reinvent ourselves.

How we might reinvent our lives:

cat1. Be curious

Keep our antenna up for new people and new ideas to enter our lives. Don’t turn down opportunities just because they do not seem to fit with our present goals and aspirations. Curiosity may have killed the cat but it makes us grow stronger.

2. Networking

Make a point to meet new people as often as we can. New people in our life who are supportive of what we are doing will usually enrich us and lead to new opportunities.

3. Follow our instincts

Going with gut feelings is often a good guide of what we need to be doing. Don’t overrule it entirely with practical suggestions from other people or with notions your mind invents.

4. Live a little

Life experience provides hints. The more experiences we accumulate, the more we get a view of what works for us and what doesn’t. These experiences provide the fodder for continuous reinventions of ourselves.

5. Visualise

Construct a picture in our minds of what we want in our life. See this image occurring as we fall asleep at night and upon awakening in the morning. Create a vision board to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal.

6. Overcome the ‘know-it-all’ stages of life

If I find myself thinking ‘that’s been tried before and it didn’t work’ I try to stop myself there and then or tell myself I’ve been doing that for too long. Or adopt a beginner’s mind. Even if we are well schooled, we have much more to learn.

7. Be a life-long learner

Seek new ways to stretch ourselves. Find new challenges to master. Attend classes, workshops, read numerous books.

You may have other ideas you can add to this list.
