Activities & mental stimulation are critical

There is no doubt that by keeping our minds and bodies active, regardless of age, we will have a more enjoyable and fulfilling life.

Mind & body together provide us with life, so it makes sense to continue, where feasible, to try new things and maintain an active life to keep brain functionality and bodily movement.

We’re not talking about running the 100m dash in 10 seconds flat, playing 5 sets of tennis or becoming a Chess Grand Master, however at Radius Care facilities, we pride ourselves on providing an array or exercises, sports, crafts and activities for our residents and also their families, to partake in.

Our monthly magazine Orbiter

Our monthly magazine publication, Orbiter, gives a glimpse of what is on offer regularly.  You can view this by simply clicking here to view the entire magazine or if you’d like a physical copy, please provide your details once you click to this page and select ‘Signup for Physical Copy’ on the right hand side of the page.

Our various facilities offer different activities, however this will give you an idea…

Golf

In the Bay of Plenty, we recently ‘built’ our own version of an International Golf Course, right in the residents’ backyards, using fruit containers as our holes, Hockey Sticks as the Golf Clubs and tennis balls.

Each hole was christened with its own name from well-known towns around NZ, which brought back memories for the tournament participants!  What a huge success, lots of fun and now, the residents have challenged a nearby village!

Crocheting

One of our residents, who learned to crochet at a very young age from his Nan, continues to be very active, making bedspreads and other products.

Residents are never too old to learn and it’s a good way to keep some dexterity, together with following a pattern.  There is always a desire for residents to work alongside their friends and fellow residents, to create works of art and something that everyone can be very proud of.

Writing & Poetry

There tends to be a desire in most people to write, although most of us never get around to it, if we’re honest.

Whether it’s a basic poem based on what we did yesterday or something larger and more complex that helps us delve into our history, relive some memories (whether good or not so good) or a chance to write our memoirs, for future generations of our families to enjoy at some stage, it is Radius Care’s desire, to help stimulate and foster this exercise.

We continue to be amazed at the beauty of the poetry that resonates from some residents and at any opportunity we publish it for others to enjoy.

Mini-Olympics

The 2016 Rio Olympics spurred memories of sporting heroics, victories and possibly ‘what could have been’ for some.

That didn’t stop more than one of our villages staging their own mini-Olympics with various challenges and activities to compete in.

The more we ask, the more we find that we have many previous champions amongst our residents.

One such resident even competed internationally and continues to display his victory medals and memorabilia proudly.

Where there is this sort of interest, we seek to foster it and provide the opportunity – even if no longer in a Bowling Alley – to give people a new experience that is certain to entertain both bowlers and spectators alike.

Not just about getting on the podium

Whatever the activity might be in life, if it helps stimulate your mind and activate your body throughout movement, then we encourage it.
The sense of achievement from taking part and then finishing a task, does wonders for the soul, creates a desire to try again and lastly, but possibly most importantly, brings a smile to our residents’ faces as well as our caregivers.

At the end of the day, sharing these special moments on life and ensuring that the little things matter, helps to bring happiness and comfort to our very special Radius Care communities around New Zealand.
