Kim had so much pressure from Trump that he had no choice but turn up.
Turn up or be nuked
Maybe time for the Israelis to use the same pressure on the Palestinians and Arabs#1683691Hero42MemberMember since: July 18, 2008

I suspect that Hillary wouldn’t have been played for a fool they way Trump has.
Certainly from what we have heard so far Trump has only got one thing from this other than a lot of publicity and that is a commitment to denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsular although there is no detail on how verifiable nuclear disarmament will be achieved.
What he has given away is acknowledging that North Korea is a sovereign state, something the US has refused to do until now.
What has Kim got:
A commitment from the US to establish new US-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
and a commitment that the United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
Meanwhile the Chinese will be going to the UN to ease sanctions which will be hard for the US to object to now that they have made these commitments.
Reminds a lot of the time President Richard Nixon and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev met without advisors present and agreed to denuclearisation and then we had months of Washington policy and defense staff trying to scale down what Nixon had committed to.
It will be interesting to see where we go from here.
The mistake I believe Trump has made is in believing Kim is a fool.
Cheers 🙂#1683785halcyon June 13, 2018 at 6:56 pm
Sorry to disagree Hero. I doubt Trump has been played for a fool. I am aware the media portray that as being the case. But when has the media looked at the story behind the story?
Have you never gone fishing? Sometimes one has to allow the fish to take small nibbles at the bait before striking.
People think Trump is a fool and he relishes that image. However, he knows how to play the long game.
As to Trump’s opinion of Kim. What evidence have you that Trump believes that Kim is a fool? From what I have read Trump’s opinion is quite the reverse. However, I had to read beyond the popular press to gain that information.

Just as an encouragement and in response to your post on Politics Today Freemind. You are correct, I would have thought there would have been a considerable amount of chatter on these pages in respect to Trump’s meeting with Kim, but nary a word I find.
Maybe Halcyon because many NZers are totaly bored of news in regards Trump, we are totally over him. Many see like as I do hes the US residents problem not New Zealanders problem. Many NZers would prefer to disscuss ( chatter) local issues that affect us within NZ than discuss another of Trumps antics. Halcyon in short we are over hearing about him in our news and on forums like this.
We do many ask as I do is why our main taxpayer owned media channel TV ONE have him and his many regular attention seeking antics on our main news. Why also do they also give us on prime time ONE news US domestic news. Meanwhile much of local NZ news which many are interested in we need to listen to our public owned radio news medium RNZ national to hear about, as we hear very little about much important NZ news on One news. Surely as we are part of the British commonwealth If we are going to have international news then give us commonwealth countries news from likes of Canada India Australia etc etc.
Freemind what have the Palestine people done to you that you wish them to be slaughtered from old to the very young. The Palestine people have lived in Palestine for more than a thousand years, most in peace and harmony. This all changed in 1947 when the European intruders arrived killed and stole their land, helped by Trumps friends the US republicans. Now t this foreign intruder in their land have driven them from the very old to the very young into an open air prison called Gaza. four years ago Israel sent planes into Gaza and bombed homes and killed over 3,000 civilians including about 500 children !!! Dont you think Freemind the Palestines have suffered enough. I repeat why do you despise them so much you want them all killed What have they done to you That you want them suffer so much?#1683799halcyon June 13, 2018 at 9:30 pm
PaulimeM, Palestinian people have had many opportunities over the last 50 years (since the 1967 war ended) to come to an agreement to share the land and form a Two State Country. Unfortunately they do not want to do that. They are currently being manipulated by Iran, who are determined to annihilate the Jews.
The reason Gaza has the blockade is to prevent Hamas from bringing rockets and mortars into the area where they can be fired at Israel.
There will never be peace in that area unless the Palestinians agree to peace and stop their attack on Israel. And I can not see that happening. I would suggest we are building up to a massive war that will see many people, both Jews and Arabs, killed. If any of the superpowers intervene in support of any side we will witness the Third World War.#1683800freemindMemberMember since: September 7, 2006

As long as humans adopt beliefs.
Especially a belief that appears to appoint their family. tribe, nation to a position of having a superior relationship with the assumed higher power above the clouds then there will always be conflict .
Similar to a worker seeking a superior relationship with the boss and causing resentment amongst the staff.
This resentment leads to conflict on the world stage and as we see throughout history, Religion and Culture with the inherent superstitions is the main cause of division.
Children are born free until adults immerse their little minds with the evil of Religion and Culture.#1683801paulinemMemberMember since: July 8, 2006

Halcyon your view is incredibly one sided and blinded to the truth that the Palestine people are native to this area as the Maoris are to NZ. Their land was stolen by the Israelies why should they MUST share it? Iran you have a hang up over helping Palestines, this conveniently ignore they come from this area the Palestine’s are their neighbours and need help against a ruthless murderous neighbour, Israel a country whom is supported by US to behave murderous. Thankfully Obarma saw this as a problem in allowing the UN to condem Israel in its bad behaviour!
By the way unlike Iran the US is not part of this area and it could be asked why is US poking its interfering nose into this area. Maybe thee world would prefer Us to stay in its own back yard and put its attention on its OWN problems !! Why does US complain about Iran MIGHT have nuclear weapons? Where as its murderous friend Israel DOES have nuclear weapons!
By the way Iran has not invaded another country in 300 years, where as US illegally invaded Iraq recently killing they believe over 100,000 civilians. Why what the REAL reason US ignored the UN resolution NOT to invade Iraq, yeah as the realist knows to control the world oil supply !! Bring on electrical vehicles and take away the demand for OIL!!#1683804halcyon June 14, 2018 at 9:38 am
PaulineM, one question. What is the Wailing Wall and where is it located.
I suggest you check back on the history of the Middle East and see who ruled that land at the beginning of World War One.
You criticise the USA of “poking their nose into this area” yet you make no mention of Russia’s involvement in “this area”.
I would suggest there is considerable interest by the super-powers in the future of that land and it has little to do with oil.#1683811jennifer128355MemberMember since: January 13, 2018

Trumps meeting with Kim, a fine episode in global relations but what has it achieved? A lot of publicity but nothing to talk about. The next chapter in the saga will be what can be talked about. Remember Neville Chamberlains piece of paper after his talk with Hitler, Peace in Our Time? What was in the paper Kim and Trump signed, friendship in our time?
