Great to see our Prime Minister showing the doubters to be wrong.

Not everyone was excited to see Jacinda Ardern become Prime Minister. Doubts, some had a few: no business experience, no policy accomplishments, not a man. And, some of them declared, as though it quite settled the matter: how ridiculous and out of her depth would she look amongst world leaders? How ludicrous would she – and by implication, we – look?

For anyone who had seen her in action, that always seemed the most spurious of objections. She is at ease with people, all people – young, old, worldly, sheltered, grand, modest, Trump. A policy wonk, she knows the issues and dilemmas that keep world leaders from a good night’s sleep. She has the kind of empathy that notices when someone has had a bad night.

So off she went, pregnant, armed with briefing papers. From the moment they touched down, it was clear that the doubters had been fretting for nothing: Macron, Merkel, May, the monarch, she clearly had their whole and delighted attention.

There was a warmth, a sense that her empathy and her positive nature was being reflected back.

Very interesting reading momabear. Looks like we could see this matter referred to the Waitangi Tribunal in the first instance. Who knows, it may eventually make it to the Supreme Court.

The Maori Party need a flag to rally around. This may grant them an option. It will certainly make Davis’s task in building relationships with Iwi more difficult.

Middlemore Hospital sewage leak a ‘stain on the ground’

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12036681
“There was no sewage spilling into the building, just some staining on the ground within the soil stack duct. To clean it up, engineering had to mix water on it, so the quantity was less than a bucket,” the DHB said in a statement.

A vastly different picture to what Government spin doctors were churning out.

Don’t blame the Government Spin Doctors mamabear. It was the same when National were in Office. Our media like to attract attention and are happy to overcook any thing they can to sell advertising. It is us idiots that believe them who should be ashamed. If we didn’t buy in to their game it would soon stop.

    Lol halcyon, you said it.

I never believed the trash story from Day One.

I used to try to scan through the Stuff website but it’s so covered in ads now I can’t even do a page down without an ad zooming me off to somewhere I’d never have any intention of going to.

It’s so long ago, I can’t remember the last time we bought a newspaper.

The problem is exacerbated by our politicians, of all hue and tone, using any media announcement as a weapon against their opposite numbers. And unfortunately we mere mortals jump in behind the Party we support because we accept whatever they say is the truth.

We never seem to learn to wait and find out what the main facts are, we just “know” they will support our particular viewpoint.

Mommabear I think you’d get better discussion if you weren’t so consistently unpleasant & insulting to other posters.

“Here you are repeating the lie that Andrew Little told, that the mine was entered.”

The words used were “entered Pike river mine portal” so contrary to your implication, there was no lie.

“Who exactly would be doing the careful vetting?
What qualifications would these people need?
    Who would decide the qualifications?
    Would examinations be required?
Would there need to be a first, second and third level of such vetting?
Any such vetters need to consider snowflakes and non-snowflakes.
And on and on, the questions..
With all that in mind, we’re right back to square one – who decides?”

I don’t know Mommabear – if I did,I’d have said so,in my view that’s something which would need some discussion, probably by those with a wide knowledge in the field of journalism & communication.

The point is that I put forward that suggestion for discussion, rather than as another means for you to nitpick.

Now that’s enough to get the abuse button pushed Lilith even though its the truth

Having a youngish woman as leader definitely hasn’t gone down at all well with some, nor has the fact that her partner is now to some extent in the public eye more than previously. There seems to be what looks very like  an organised campaign to spread malicious rumours intended to destroy his reputation, solely due to his relationship with the PM.

But most seem to prefer to give a new govt & its leader a fair go,as is the usual kiwi tradition.

Its definitely going to be interesting, since they seem to have a very different style to what we’re used to. 😎  🙂

“The same carping that she was inadequate for international diplomacy also expresses itself day by day here: “yes; but what’s she done? It’s all talk”. That kind of defeatism never contemplates a beginning followed by a middle and an end some time from now.

This government has lofty carbon free goals, and of course it’s much too soon to say if they’ll come to fruition, but they have begun. Now let’s see how many steps will follow.

Ardern spoke of the lofty carbon-free goal to students in Paris, refraining the idea that the generations before her were shaped by the debate on Vietnam, the politics of sport and apartheid, and the nuclear-free movement and that hers will be shaped by climate change.

In expressing the idea in that way she makes two key points, the first: that there can surely be no greater policy priority than this one. And the second: that when you reflect on those other large issues of history, you see that they were not simple, and progress was not easy, but they were, by then end, dealt with and the world was left better.

It was a leader’s message, delivered as a leader.”
