We will be watching Q&A tomorrow as a new poll puts Peter Dunne behind Labours Greg O,Connor in The Ohariu seat. Jacinda has certainly put a rocket into this election  but  can,t afford complacency.Cheers 😀

Child crime has been allowed to escalate for too long but now light is on the horizon. National are planning to send convicted hoodlums to a training camp for a year and FINE PARENTS, the real culprits, who have children roaming the streets alone in the early mornings. At last, force is being applied where it will do some good.

    Oh Doogie.

Fining ‘bad’ parents? What if they’re poor? Lowincome? Low wage earners?

How does fining them do anything to help them parent better?

I might favour massive fines for middle class parents and boot camp for their spoilt self entitled offspring since they all know better and have the resources to do better.

But if children are roaming the streets in the early hours how do you know that their parents aren’t some of those forced to work all hours of the day and night cleaning, nurse aiding, care giving, for a pittance just to support their families.

If I recall you are one of those who claim businesses may not be able to pay a living wage? And shouldn’t be required to? And at the same time, benefits should be less again so as to encourage people to work, even for inadequate recompense, right?

Well, absent parents and wayward youth are some of the many consequences of that policy.

There are far better ways to deal with this and a living wage and affordable housing lies right at the heart.

Some people just love to punish!

Been away from GUPS for a while but I see we have a political thread again.

Correct me if I’m wrong – has my Maori & Politics thread been stopped?….given that Maori in Politics is very current affairs – ….why?

    Just asking?

    Arandar,

    What are you smoking?

Show me where I have mentioned fining penalties that you are admonishing me for.

Remember me reminding you about jumping over Taranaki gates

‘Boot camps & fining parents’ definitely helps govt appear tough,at least to those who might be unaware of the disastrous record boot camps have here as well as overseas.

Its a tough sounding ‘solution’ which won’t solve the problem & may well cause far more damage as it has in the recent past. And it isn’t about fixing the problem;its about making govt look good to those who believe strength equals harsh punishment & particularly recent immigrants from places like China & India where harsh punishments hold sway because the long term effects are either not understood or not considered.

Govt must be well aware that it won’t work, must know of the results of disastrous attempts at boot camps here & so this looks very like a cynical attempt at getting votes with no regard whatever for those involved.

And while fining parents sounds like govt is getting tough on those wicked parents, the reality is likely to be different.  And I can’t see how any govt could possibly be unaware of that, which is really sad, that any govt could use its people in this way.

But then its election year – anything to get votes & to hell with the damage done eh.
