There is fault on both sides in this conflict;we humans are a violent species & until we learn to better control that, nothing much is going to change.
I’m not sure that there’s anything more tragic than seeing people who were themselves so oppressed & persecuted, now cruelly persecuting & oppressing others in much the same ways.
The first voices raised in protest against the way Palestinians were being treated came from the survivors of the death camps & its tragic that the govt of the day & those since, took no heed of them.
Perhaps what’s needed is a council of grandmothers, both Israeli & Palestinian, all of whom have lost family in this madness to work together to bring about peace.
They can certainly do no worse than the present nightmare.#1680849halcyonMemberMember since: May 4, 2014

I agree lilith7. A council of grandmothers could do no worse than the leaders of the various groups involved.
But on the other hand, when one considers the history of the conflict, I doubt any negotiations will be successful. Eventually we will see an all out war and unfortunately it will not be limited to the two factions involved.
The impasse is over the possession of Jerusalem. The Palestinians will not accept a sharing of Jerusalem and there is no way Israel will surrender Western Jerusalem that contains the Wailing Wall, the last remaining part of the old Temple. You would have more luck in getting Tainui to surrender Taupiri Mountain to the Government. Both Temple Mount and Taupiri Mountain are sacred land.

This Sacred crap and it’s associated beliefs are the problem
If it be taken in it’s totality the whole planet should be sacred not just a silly wall or Mountain
Just goes to show the feeble mindedness of Beliefs.#1680934criticMemberMember since: June 6, 2011

That’s a great post supergold as it gives a clear and modern perspective.
I liked the picture in the herald of some young david with an ancient slingshot.
The slingshot up against the best america can supply in the way of automatic weapons and spin doctors gives perspective to the spread of the yellow goliath.

Peace has to come sooner or later & I don’t think its likely to happen under present leadership;what’s needed is leaders who are focused on peace above all else.#1680946halcyonMemberMember since: May 4, 2014

Peace will never come in the Middle East lilith7. Not when you have Iran and Hamas wanting the complete nihilation of the Jewish people. Ayatollah Kamenei has made it very clear that he wants the Jewish people dead. And while he rules Iran there can be no negotiations as to a Two State solution.

Halycon Israel has no right to be in Palestine in the first place, The state of Israel exists on stolen land etc. The Palestine’ had lived their peacefully for possibly a thousand years They the modern day Israelies claim they are connected to the original Jewish Palestine residents …this is a falsehood.
The majority of Israelis now living in Palestine historically their routes come from Europe not the Middle East. The original Jewish residents whom lived in Palestine at the time of the roman invasion ( ie two thousand years ago) and before have been proven to have become extinct (by natural attrition) possibly over a thousand years ago.
The only reason Israel has remained in existence is the interference of the powerful Jewish lobby in the US that ensured USA has interfered and propped the Israelis up since 1947, no matter what they did ie the murder of over 3000 Gazans in 2014 including approx 500 CHILDREN .
The UN had no right to encourage a Jewish settlement in Palestine, as the residents whom lived there in 1947 were never consulted. The Palestine’s were in no way responsible for the problems the Jewish people suffered from by the Nazis. yet they have made to suffer because of what happened to the Jews by the Nazis.

Peace will never come to the Middle East while greed for power, control and oil trumps common sense and decency.
The Jews have been in conflict since forever. What do you think the Old Testament is if not a history, or rather a reinterpretation of their own Holy Books, of thousands upon thousands of years of being invaded, conquered, dispersed, and persecuted.
I’d say they are behaving as all persecuted individuals and groups eventually do, with anger, hatred, a sense that you are either with them or against them, sociopathy or psychopathy.
And perhaps so little self awareness that they are treating the Palestinians as they have themselves been treated.
