Hero, it is these emotive responses from those who support the global warming theory that brings the theory into disrepute.
Totara makes to good points in his post. 1) He has a small carbon footprint, whether that is by design or by choice I do not know. If we were all to reduce our carbon footprints then that would reduce the rate of global warming.
2) There is a high probability that the human race will eventually become extinct. The current unrest in the world can, at anytime, trigger a nuclear attack. This is especially true in the Middle East at present as Iran endeavours to become a super power. And can we exclude acts of nature, both micro-environmental (disease) or macro-environmental (from out of space)?
It's ok if you disagree with me. I can't force you to be right.#1719448Hero42 May 16, 2019 at 1:12 pm
I didn’t think it emotive. I was curious to know if Totara was serious in allowing his family to die out without trying to avoid it. On aspect of nature is creatures will fight tooth and nail to survive and to protect their family.
It is true mankind will become extinct someday if the doesn’t find a way to leave this planet and colonise another. We know the sun will probably eventually expand and swallow the earth but not for another 7.6 billion years.
And it is true as you point out that mankind could create its own extinct through nuclear war and the subsequent nuclear winter.
But the question is given we can see what we are doing and what the outcome could be should we just sit back and let it happen or should we do something about it as we have in the past and as we are planning for at present in terms of micro-environmental (disease) or macro-environmental (from out of space) disasters.

Halycon I find your comments re Iran interesting, she does not have nuclear weapons and has never planned to have any. All Iran wants to continue trading her oil to provide the basics to its country this is what we saw under Obarma t was happening.
Now we have a grossly self serving self interested Trump in charge determined to stir a conflict with Iran as they refuse to be another US begging buddy/servant in regards its oil supplies.
Now as far as nuclear threat well it is well known that t Israel certainly does have nuclear weapons and as we saw with its murders in Gaza a few years and the 1967 conflict , it has no qualms letting of its weaponry for any “perceived advantage” to Israel. So Why Halycon did you suggest the threat to the world peace and well being is Iran whom have not provoked or caused a human conflict war in over 300yrs. Where as Israel, all it seems to want to do is cause misery and conflict to any perceived villain they decide is a threat to them.

Actually Hero you need to do some homework on the Middle East situation.
The following quote comes from the Tehran Times today
“This announcement is for 60 days. We have announced to the other side, the five countries [Germany, France, UK, Russia and China], that if they come to the negotiating table in 60 days and we reach a conclusion and safeguard our main interests which are oil [sale] and banking relations, we will return to the previous situation of May 7, 2019,” Rouhani told a cabinet meeting.
However, he warned, if any conclusion is not reached, Iran will resume enriching uranium and will not follow obligations under the JCPOA according to which its uranium enrichment should not exceed the purity level of 3.67 percent.
Secondly, Tehran is developing a close relationship with Russia who are providing military aid to them. And Russia is a nuclear power.
As to Israel, they have attempted many times over the last 40 years to negotiate a peace settlement with the Palestinians. It is the Palestinians who keep walking away from the negotiation table.
What our media fail to tell us is that
Palestinian terrorists on Shabbos fired over 250 rockets into Israel, drawing dozens of retaliatory airstrikes on targets across the Gaza Strip in a round of intense fighting. The rocket fire continued into Sunday morning, with the IDF reporting over 430 total. (May 4, 2019 9:15 pm)
Yes, Israel retaliates when they are attacked. Just as we would do. They take their defence very seriously. And they need to. The leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, is on record as saying he looks forward to the day Israel is annihilated It is Iranian funding that allows the terrorist group, Hamas, to wage their acts against Israel.
That is just a taste. There are other dynamics involved. But it is an area that will impact on the world. Unfortunately out media are keeping us in the dark
It's ok if you disagree with me. I can't force you to be right.#1719493paulinemMemberMember since: July 8, 2006

Halycon your comments at the end are revealing – nothing more valuable than the TRUTH. Israel exists on STOLEN land from the Palestines that is the TRUTH …they took it by force helped by the US.Israel does not deserve to exist as it was lies that this is there home by right !!
An honest Israeli Jew tells the Real Truth about Israel
You made no mention of the 3000 Gazans Israel murdered in Gaza in 2014 including 500 plus Palestine children and unknown Gaza homes destroyed.
As far as the rockets sent to Israel YEAH right so TRUE !! Who controls the media you quote US maybe -Halycon !!
The campign against Iran by US is at the prompting of Israel, Why Iran is providing valuable help and assistance to the Palestine’s, to help them to continue existing, otherwise Israel would steal more from them and force them into more economic slavery. Something your friends are experienced at are they not Halycon ie Israel and USA
Halycon I suggest your comments be the TRUTH and not propaganda exaggerated truth !!!#1719499totaraMemberMember since: November 29, 2007

I am not happy to see humans go extinct. I am a bit of a pessimist and cannot see the nations of the world doing anything to stop it. The driving force is greed. 10 billion humans consuming as fast as they can. David Attenborough is right.#1719501lilith7MemberMember since: April 9, 2017

Surely,if there’s one thing we should be ’emotive’ about, its the possibility of the destruction of both our planet & ourselves.#1719502Hero42 May 17, 2019 at 11:54 am
I presume your last comment was to Paulinem and not me.
These are the countries that have nuclear weapons:
Russian Federation (formerly part of the Soviet Union)
What we did back in the 60s was to introduce the MAD policy. MAD stands for Mutually Assured Destruction. The policy was each country could only have one line of defense so that it could survive long enough to retaliate. In that way a country wouldn’t start a nuclear war because it would know the other could retaliate and both countries would be destroyed.
So far it has worked although Trump is risking that with some of his actions in regard to the agreement with Russia.
Question is, is any other country mad enough to risk destruction by launching a nuclear attack and are their big backers, Russia, USA, Britain and France, mad enough to support them with additional attacks and global escalation?
Cheers 🙂#1719503Hero42 May 17, 2019 at 11:59 am
The planet will survive and if a few percent of species survive, evolution will allow them to recover and repopulate the planet but it will take tens if not hundreds of millions of year to do so.
There have been five major extinctions so far and depending on where you draw the line on calling it a mass extinction up to 20 more.
The planet will survive and life will survive, mankind may not.
If we do survive but don’t address climate change our children and grand children won’t be enjoying the beautiful, vibrant and varied world we have enjoyed in our lifetime.
