Is it the same for all residents of Lumsden requiring hospital care? A woman in labour could give birth on the way to Dunedin. Does Lumsden not have a medical clinic and maternity unit. If not, why not? What is the status of Lumsden if it does not qualify for normal medical and maternity care. Is the population unable to finance a birthing unit? Not good enough. But then, here in the Gardan City one can give birth in the Maternity unit but expected to be gone to another hospital within three hours regardless of the hour. Today, mothers are out within a few days with their baby. No Plunket visits I believe. Were we molly-coddled in the olden days fifty years back?

What infurate me in regards health crisis and lack of money etc is re the Nurses and midwife payments is   DHB saying we cannot pay more  …yeah right and Yeah   when Jonathan Coleman was in charge he saw that  health management were very well paid and well looked after. In the SDHB Coleman sacked the elected board as he claimed they were not managing to budget, Replaced  them with his own appointee whom gets $1500 per day for PART TIME work and yeah also all traveling expenses ( I understand she lives in Wellington  )That works out nearly half a million per year this lady gets !!!

I imagine the helicopter  gets used a lot by management to get around. After all  we cannot expect this privilidged few to travel as the common taxpayer does by private vehicle on the roads.

It is easy to blame the current govt. for health problems that have been many years in the making. For many years back to 1980s we have been pouring money into overpaid fat cats to sit on boards as advisors etc. while squeezing the money paid for actual health services.

Joybel, when I gave birth to my son in 1975, at Lumsden maternity, the sound of a new born crying was common.  The demand for more  maternity care was so strong back then, that Southland Hospital  was building a new modern 20 bed unit.

Now in 2018 this unit is lying empty, maternity care  for the new born  as the demand is so small are born in the main hospital What changed simple ABORTION in  1975 it was not available, as I was having my three other children after my son, at this new Southland maternity abortions were not in such demand. Today in 2018 Southland Hosptial in  the abortion clinics genocides over 500 per annum of Southland unborn  lives with potential. New Zealand kills over 13,000 unborn children lives with potential. All because some NZers believe its a women right to choose to kill the life she created by her  choosing  to have sex.  It is no wonder  maternity care like Lumsden are down sizing. If you approve of abortions been provided then you also  must support the closing down of maternity units like Lumsden ( the demand  for them is simply not there anymore !!!)

By the way Joybel  keep in mind these abortions on demand now at the clinics are paid with the taxpayer paid for health dollar. They tell  me one of the consultants at Southland abortion clinic works part time filling in forms as a consultants ( there is no attempt to provide an actually open minded vocal consultancy) This part time work for the SDHB sees her earning approx $200,000 per annum.  It is noticeable the DHB do not reveal how much they pay out from the health dollars  our for abortion services. Obviously the NZ public would be angry and  horrified at h0w much this service is costing our health dollar.

Many thanks for responding to my post, Paulinem. As you possibly guessed Ihave never been to Lumsden. Knew it existed and had to express my concern. Your post has enlightened me. While promises are always being made they can take years to eventuate. The birthing unit is a necessity for even the few who are expecting and who knows what the future may bring in population growth. Most women give birth in the natural order, but that difficult one should be catered for without going a hundred plus K’s.

Alas Jennifer, freedoms we once knew and had are disappearing fast.
Others are deciding for us what we can say, what we can eat and drink, where we can buy things, what we can and can’t do with our own bodies, where we can go.
Soon we won’t be able to buy so-called single use plastic bags. We use these bags over and over, they never wear out, even with holes they have uses. So called enviro-friendly bags have very limited uses – I wonder how they’d go wrapping food  like fish and meat for the freezer.

I for one am not a fan for Don Brash, the anti Abortion movement and several other things in the news. However “Freedom of Speech” means that others have the right to “their” opinions too so it is fair to allow their soap box. Also it means I don’t need to stop and listen “Freedom” goes both ways. What does annoy me is the lengths and manner used by both sides of the argument.

Obviously the truth of abortion ie the deliberate killing of an innocent no choice victims life ..bother you WHY ? The reality is obvious the more unborn you kill the less demand for services such as Maternity care units.

Also ironically there is a many voices in this country  demanding we allow  more immigrants in as they need the labour for the workforce. If we hadn’t allowed adults  for self serving  advantage to kill our unborn then thousands more  life would have been born and would have provided all the local  workforce labour required without needing immigrants!

When our local DHB decided to close the maternity home in the local town the midwives in the area raised the finance and built a birthing unit here.  Its situated in a local hub of a supermarket / mitre 10 / shopping centre and people said what an odd place to  put it but it has worked very well.  Now only mothers expecting complications travel 30 kms to the bigger centre.
