I know a couple of aid workers who’ve worked in many posts overseas including Africa.

Neither of them have ever said the things you say to us Freemind, either about the people they went to assist or about minorities here at home.

But we, you and us, have said all this many times over the years.

You will not stop with the cheap insults designed to start these arguments, and to derail the actual point of these threads, and nor, I think, will we stop resisting you.

What I think will happen is more and more GrownUps will no longer join these threads because it’s all becoming so pointless and boring.

I recall Freemind saying s/he had never heard of Aotearoa. Which leads me to belive s/he has no passport. Aotearoa is clearly written on it.

How do we delineate between “freedom of speech” and “personal attack”? Surely when the comment is made about the individual it is personal attack and therefore runs the risk of becoming hate speech.

By comparison we need the freedom to express opinion about a topic. And the appropriate response would be to rebut the statement offering evidence of the errors contained in the expressed opinion.

Unfortunately our culture has been contaminated by our rugby culture whereby we play the person and not the ball.

    Already disturbed, approach with caution.

Oh but Halcyon, can we say then that ‘freedom of speech’ means we can say what we like, how we like, or whether anyone else likes. It still only comes down to one’s opinion, and not caring if that opinion   is different to your own. Any form of speech can be delivered in different ways, it can be informative, helpful, sympathetic, and many other forms. However if the speech is of a negative style to the listener or reader to the extent of being rude and offensive, hurtful, and judgemental, then that becomes ‘hate speech’, which automatically gets people’s hackles up.

I had an incident recently, parking my car in front of a shop with a yellow line, and as a truck was also doing so I had to park a bit on an angle, to pick up a couple of boxes and a heavy object, as there was no parking anywhere nearby. A young woman passerby spoke very feistily about not being able to park there. I said I was doing a pick up, and would be a few seconds. She still very angrily spouted on the rules and regulations, and I carried on picking up my goods, as she attacked the truck driver the same way. As I struggled out with my goods she started on me again. She obviously wasn’t a traffic warden, and I calmly assured her that I know I am parking illegally, but I have no choice. Wouldn’t it have been much more helpful for her, a young woman to have helped a 70 plus year old, and the job would have been done in two tics, and I would have driven away thinking ‘what a thoughtful, kind helping woman’ and feeling good, instead of thinking ‘what a bitchy know it all’ and feeling aggrieved.  😉

And there it is in a nutshell…we do not initiate these insulting remarks, we respond to yours ….if you don’t like the response you know what to do.

Have been visiting and browsing this site for many years

What seems to be insulting to most of you is the existence people of compassion who are prepared to put their lives at risk to achieve better lives for the unfortunate

Having done some aid work overseas {Sadly not much} and seeing the compounds that a lot of Aid groups abide in and completely cut off from those in need is worrisome for those of us who part with our cash in the assumption it is going to reach those in need.
Corruption is rampant within aid groups and only a few get totally involved with the natives

In lots of cases aid workers have been murdered. Which is something never reported in the western press. As it could possibly be seen as Racial profiling

My admiration goes to those who give aid overseas and I can understand that it may affect them traumatically.  However is there any reason for them to insult other races / cultures?

Will just say my piece and then out of this conversation

    Judging from your reply huiatahi

I take it that you would never insult or condemn a culture that uses this cultural sensitivity acceptance to carry out horrific tortures to other humans

You must realize that some cultures are uncivilized and get away with their murderous ways because the west has lost the ability to challenge their grotesque methods
Everyone condemns the British and European empires . BUT they tried to civilize the uncivilized.
Just look at Africa today and see the whole sliding backward to the dark ages
Just look at Zimbabwe and South Africa and take note

….Is there any psychological testing of people before they serve overseas?

When one has their one sided views, thrust down your throat on here, by mostly Laborites, one will get there gander up. Its been going on for years.

Remember, when this site was thriving!  Many of you have short memories. Don’t even bother me on why!

I see on “stuff” its the Asians getting it next.  You had many years to see what was happening!
