On retirement from our business of 35 years we discovered that the accountant my husband had chosen had not been paying the full amount of tax we sent to him to be sent on to the IRD. Ours being a new business they had accepted the small amount the accountant was sending in to them, on his own cheque.
Without going into the whole sordid affair the final outcome was that on retirement we had to sell our lovely home and use all our savings to pay the IRD for 35 years of taxes. The accountant went to jail and we finished up with virtually nothing.
On the spur of the moment we decided to buy a motorhome and just drive away from it all. We had always said that we would love to see more of our own country and that is just what we did. For three and a half years we drove all over NZ; if it rained ‘that’ way, we would go the opposite direction.
With very little to pay for we soon recovered our equilibrium and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We loved our country and most times simply drove down roads simply because they were there and we just wanted to find out where they went. The end result was more often than not some of the most beautiful scenery and places we were able to stop at for a little time and enjoy.
After three months we had got over the change in our lives circumstances and become more relaxed than we had been for a long time and we had caught up with our many friends and relations from all over NZ. We made so many friends who were also ‘travelling’ and parked in some beautiful spots for short rests from time to time.
I could go on for ages about the beautiful places in our country; so many parts of the world seem to be represented in much of our own scenery.
My husband has now passed away but I still have the motorhome, I just cannot bring myself to sell it, it holds so many memories after all our trips and the wonderful times we had together.
