If you’re a greenie and a keen cyclist or tramper then you’ll love this. YHA New Zealand with a network of over 50 hostels nationwide have launched a special offer for all those people who want to travel around the country sustainably.
Even though the old days of YHA are long gone (no more chores or curfews, and no longer must you arrive on foot or by bike to be allowed to stay – anything goes…) YHA New Zealand has started a retro revival of on foot or by bike travel with a modern twist; they’re offering those who travel sustainably on self supported through-hiking or cycle touring trips of New Zealand a discount on their accommodation and YHA membership. Those people who are motivated to cycle their way to a YHA that’s either 100kms or 1,000kms away without the aid of a support vehicle will be rewarded with up to 25% off the overnight rate per person per night at any YHA backpacker in NZ and if not already a member of YHA they’ll also be rewarded with a 25% discount off a one year YHANZ membership.
Be warned though you can’t just hop on a bike 20 meters down the road and expect to get this great discount, they’re accepting genuine travelers only who are self supported so that means no support vehicles, buses or shuttle transfers.(See the yha.co.nz for terms and conditions)
YHA welcomes thousands of travelers of all ages and nationalities (including New Zealanders!) through their doors each year. With very affordable rates, a diverse range of hostels - including modern city getaways and cosy bach style beach retreats, and accommodation options from dorm rooms to double ensuites, it’s no wonder more and more Kiwis are catching on to backpacking in their own back yard. And because YHA is committed to sustainability and have won awards for it too (The sustainable business network awards, Qualmark enviro ratings, the Virgin Responsible Tourism award to name a few) you can rest easy knowing your holiday is having a minimal impact on the environment. These awards are a result of their dedicated staff who have implemented all sorts of sustainability initiatives including feeding organic waste to local farmers pigs, solar hot water systems and energy saving devices throughout the hostels.
