Now I don’t tango, in fact my dancing skills are rather minimal if my husband’s comments are anything to go by, but if I’m going to learn to tango, what better place to learn than in Argentina, the home of the Argentina Tango? Passion, fire and romance.
To really feel the flavour of a city, or culture, I love to get involved. Being a bystander is not my style and as Matt next door said yesterday, “it’s not a rehearsal you know. I’m getting one shot at this life and I’m here to make the most of it.” So this holiday is one that appeals. I get to visit Argentina which has all of those far away, South American, latino type of mysteries, I will learn a passionate dance which I know I’ll enjoy, I’ll stay in haciendas which definitely appeals to the hedonistic side of me, and I’ll play in the evenings with the locals in the Tango parties (they are called Milongas). Wow! Now that’s something to live life for.
When I come home, I’ll not only be showing the photos of where I’ve been, but I’ll be demonstrating my new dancing skills, I’ll have new friends in far-away places and there is no way I could have had this holiday by just sitting in my armchair, watching a video. I’ve even heard that there are classes in Buenos Aires that will teach me to cook Argentina style. Hmmm. I wonder if my husband could manage to cope with me dancing like the wind AND cooking? That could be worth investigating. Especially if there’s lot of tasting, dining and good company involved.
We’ve found a 7 night / 8 day package which provides instruction, accommodation, breakfasts, a couple of nights in the Milongas as well as time for sightseeing around Buenos Aires. It’s priced from US$863 twin share so that’s about NZ$1,260.
Every day has a private tango lesson. On the first day there’s a tour of Buenos Aires to get a feel for where everything is and with a guide who speaks English, it’s actually going to make sense. The milongas are tango dance halls and don’t really start until after 10 or 11 in the evening so there’s a couple of late nights later in the week and I’m definitely sleeping in the next morning! (Maybe that’s when I’ll phone home to tell them all what they are missing. They’ll be able to hear the party going on in the background)
And I see that they also include a special dinner and tango show on one evening. Looks like my week is going to be very busy, particularly when I just have to go shopping at some stage…. And I haven’t even timetabled in the cooking or the wine tasting yet. Looks like I could need more time.
