Sharing a Memorable Trip

Judging by the emails and Christmas cards, it’s hard to know who enjoys ‘Senior Tours’ bus trips the most – John and Annie Lancaster who host their over 50s clients throughout the country or their clients whose correspondence is proof that they’ve logged some of their best adventures for years.

John wouldn’t swap his coach seat for an office job for anything. “We love it and they love it and all of us enjoy meeting new people and learning new things about places we thought we knew lots about,” says John. “The best is when I hear them saying: “I remember this place when it was….” and you hear all their stories. Everybody wins and it’s just fabulous being part of that.”

John is the coach driver and commentator with a legendary repertoire of jokes. Annie runs the organisational side of the business. On tour, she’s the on-board hostess serving picnic afternoon teas and helping clients get to know each other.

“We’ve introduced clients from travel clubs in other parts of the country who join our trips and we’ve taken our clients and ‘Senior Club’ south for trips with other travel clubs,” says John.

Memorable trips that are on their 2009/2010 schedule include sunset on the Hokianga Harbour at the Copthorne Hotel in Omapere as part of the 4-day Bay of Islands trip, their 6-day “Escape to Gisborne” and their two South Island tours covering the West Coast and Marlborough from Christchurch and their Otago/Southland tour out of Dunedin.

‘Senior Tours’ is a natural off-spring of John’s 30 years as a tour coach driver and their awareness of a need for tours for older people wanting to travel but lacking the confidence to do it alone.

They travel in style on John’s 5-star air-conditioned luxury coach (with toilet) which ‘kneels down’ for easy access and which has storage for wheelchairs, walking frames and luggage.

“It’s a chance to meet new people, get out of the house and enjoy life,” says John Lancaster.
