Italian toilets

While visiting the beautiful town of San Gimiginano my husband and I both needed to use the toilet and discovered what we thought must have been the only Public Toilet in the place,
We stood in the queue of the unisex facility and waited with many others.

The old Italian "custodian" sat and read his newspaper and collected the fee and before long it was our turn.

My husband went to the first vacant toilet and then it was me to the next. Well what did I find - a hole in the floor and nothing to hold onto and the state of the place!! What was I to do, there was urine on the floor and the walls did not look very clean, did I face the door or the wall??

I just told myself to deal with it all and I did when a young woman entered the cubicle that my husband had just vacated and I heard her comment " oh I think I am in the wrong one" and we called out " Oh no you are Not" then we heard fits of hysterical laughing, well that just got us all going and we laughed and laughed as we left the place.

I think they were the dirtiest toilets we have ever seen and we will never forget San Gimiginano.

So travellers beware of the toilets in Italy and throughout Europe, most are a hole in the ground so be sure that you wear sturdy shoes when entering.
